Ran across this site while researching something 4Runner related. I think the statistics and the picture that's painted here is quite misleading. A T4R with 200K miles is just getting broken in! We all know!

Anyone who actually believes that only 4% of 4Runners makes it beyond 200K must not get out of the house much.

 

I would venture to say only 4% DON'T make 200k! And probably 3% of that is because the vehicle was totaled!!

 

Wow, you mean my 4Runner might actually REACH 200,000 miles? (had a 1988 that went over 305k, and a 2001 that did have bad rust at 265k. Both of them gems, mechanically. And already over 100k on my 2019). I think the best comment I read was this, commented on 12/5/2021 regarding a 2004 that was bought new:

"Purchased NEW immediatly developed a RUSTED FRAME which the dealer in Keene NH refused to repair so we had it welded a a temporary measure. It has had 2 complete brake jobs,factory undercoating that never ACTUALLY was done makes this car a worthless piece of sh*t"

Rusted immediately, so bad that it needed welded. Anything that rusted that fast would wake you up at night with all the noise.

BUT, it's true that rust has been a bane for these. Happily, my 2019 looks great underneath after 100k in the salt belt (I rinse though). So maybe they made some changes.

 

Probably the biggest hindrance to a vehicle being reported to go over 200k miles by the original owner is that quite a few people simply want something new after 10-15 years. People like me, who keep vehicles as long as possible, are less common.

As for those who bought used vehicles, all bets are off because there's often no way to prove what care and maintenance the vehicle received. Example: my son bought a 2009 Corolla with 200k miles on it. The aftermarket remote start that someone had installed soon took the battery, alternator, and starter with it when it wigged out. Can't blame that on the car, but some will. After fixing those things and yanking the remote start, zero problems for 2+ years.

 

This article is a perfect example of lousy repetitive cut-and-paste journalism. It mentions “rust” 28 times and “200,000 miles” 13 times.
