clear coat issues.

Hi all.
My blurple baby was sitting in Pahrump Nevada for a couple 3 years, and the top coat on the hood and roof took a pretty hard hit. I was wondering if it is possible just to rub out the edges a little bit and throw some wax on.
A paint job isn't in the right now and the rest of the paint looks pretty darn good.

 

What about throwing a vinyl wrap on it?

 

Once clear is gone its gone. You can repaint, wrap, or dip it.

 

I didn't think there was any way to actually save the clear coat, I was talking about rubbing Out The Faded edges of it to where it's actually good and just throwing wax.
I have a line on a detail guy, I'll see what he has to say too.

 

The easiest way will be to wet sand the area and a fine cut compound then a high polish with med speed buffer. But it won't blend TOTALLY perfect. Fine enough for the roof, but it will be like having a semi gloss spot on high gloss for the hood. If you have a body shop detail that mainly works with orange peel regularly would probably do the best job. I always used their stuff at the shop when i did it.

not much you can do...maybe tweak it, per earlier suggestions..eventually, you'll have to schedule a re paint. peeling clear coat, is a familiar tale of woe for many Toyotas...my friend's 2008 4 Runner, has a front hood, that is badly peeling, etc

 

If it's just a few tiny areas and hasn't been exposed to sun too long you can fine sand and feather it in to the existing CC and hit it with a TWO STAGE(not SS) rattle can CC and probably get a finish that will look fine................for a while........ but remember the CC on sun areas, hood, roof, top of fenders is aged and will be failing soon. It also depends upon what color it is and how finicky you are. I have shot cars without doing a full repaint and it involves partial repaint and CC. I will warn you that the time involved to do an acceptable job may make it cost ineffective to do a partial. The prep time is about the same. A pro shop will tell you the same thing. Saying that, I have done just partial repaint of faded areas numerous times and then 2 or 3 clear coats over the whole car on to a cleaned, fine sanded degreased dust free surfaces of some of my low value old cars and they look virtually new if you are careful to do it in as dust free environment as you can without a paint booth. CC is super easy to lay on and way more forgivable than paint. The cost of repaint/CC is almost all labor anyway. If the car is only worth a few thou you can do this or the wraps and the new rub on coatings out there and be totally happy.............for a while........... Almost all 3rd gens are at the end of the paint life with the CC going or soon to go. Do we keep them because we like the paint or what's underneath? Youtube has lots of videos on this. the 6th gear garage is just one of the best.
