What have you done to your 5th Gen 4Runner today?

Absolutely love my Prinsu full length rack. Drilling the roof is way easier than you'd think, just gotta take your time. Only gripe was the poor customer service and long lead times, though since Prinsu just got bought by CBI, that should take care of everything

Spotted another T4R while running into town from the lake. Hard to tell mine is lifted and theirs is stock with the slope of the lot.

Where in NY are you? Upstate is much different that NYC or LI Unfortunately the liberal jackasses of NYC continue to vote in the POS otherwise known as Cuomo. With that, NY continues to go deeper and deeper into the toilet.

Ha lol yep! Upstate NY is still a much nicer place than anywhere else. I still vacation in Newburgh ( POS town ) every summer. The KOA campground up there is still nice even though the town is disgusting. LI will always be home but nothing more.

Got my tires rebalanced and rotated at Discount. I made sure they used proper torque specs, but I was concerned by how they lifted it up. They used the floor lift with the rubber blocks but the front blocks they put behind the transmission crossmember (right side right behind it, left side a little further back to clear the KDSS plate). I was worried the front blocks were carrying too much of the weight and the truck could tip forward (it was pretty nose low and you could see the front blocks were compressed a bit compared to the rears). I even grabbed a manager as I was concerned, but he checked it and thought it was fine. Everything worked out ok, but is it bad to have them lift it there? I'm probably worrying over nothing, but I was checking the frame for damage/indentations after.

When I worked on cars back in the 80's the worst vehicles for putting on lifts were Jeep CJ's, you couldn't find lift points that would lift the vehicle level, was super scary working under one that was tilted at 35 degrees nose high. We did have one fall off the lift once, no one was killed.

 

Yeah that was my first worry...it tipping forward on its nose. But then I got concerned about the majority of the weight being on the front two points behind the cross member. I know it's most likely silly, I just got nervous about any potential damage/denying that could cause.

 

You want the front posts as far forward as possible. The front of the truck is much heavier than the back. If the legs on their posts didn't extend, they should have simply backed the truck up a foot so the front posts were more forward. Sounds like a mechanic that didn't know what he was doing. Very unlikely it would damage the frame but it could have caused the truck to tip forward off the lift.

 

Wasn't actually one of those lift types. It was the flat platform lift that you drive over to enter the bay. They then used what appeared to be 4x6" rubber blocks to allow the platform to lift the truck up high enough. In the past I guess they did the same thing, although one time they just used rear blocks and let the front of the platform rest against the cross memeber itself. I'm sure I'm probably worrying over nothing...I just freaked when I saw how nose low it was and that it seemed unsteady. Then I got concerned to see how compressed the front to blocks got as they were carrying the majority of the trucks weight. Thought there might have been a possibility (although very unlikely) that it could have cause some frame denting or something.

 

No offense my friend, but after reading your posts in this thread it sounds like you are being a bit too picky with your vehicle. I understand you paid a lot for it and you expect quality work to be performed on it like all of us, but the comment above is over the top. Frame denting??

Two possible suggestions for your situation:

1) Learn to work on your vehicle yourself. You might be able to achieve the perfection you demand.....or at least realize that perfection isn't always attainable.

2) Lease. Perhaps vehicle ownership isn't for you. It seems like you fret a bit too much over the little things and since you don't own the vehicle, perhaps it will alleviate some of that ownership angst you seem to manifest.

Please don't take this as an attack. It's not. Just offering a few suggestions. Take them or leave them.

 

No I understand. I am too picky. To a fault. I used to do all my own work on my Bronco when I had it. As I get older I get less motivated to do it all though. I've let myself get way too wrapped up in keeping the vehicle pristine, which is why the tailgate thing gutted me so bad. I'm trying to stop letting the little things bother me, but I'm finding that tough to do on some levels. I know perfection really isn't attainable, just drive me nuts when something isn't right or it comes back worse than it went in. And you're right...worrying about the frame bending or denting from that is pretty over the top. Haha. But that's where my mind goes when I let it.

Funny enough, one of the solutions I've considered is getting rid of the 4Runner and leasing something for the very reasons you mentioned. Then buy an old 4x4 I don't fret over so much. Still kicking that around. Anyway, thanks for entertaining my questions. It helps to vent and get feedback.

 

Hey BackSlider, just tried the canoe on the stock roof rack. With both cross members set to their furthest points the balance point sets the canoe to the rear of the vehicle by a lot. It's stable but looks...Odd. Panzr15 (Panzer as in german for tank?) I've been doing a lot of research and the Prinsu seem to fit the bill for me. Although there is the pucker factor of drilling into a brand new vehicle!

 

I hope it turns out right for you. I understand the frustration when work performed on a vehicle doesn't turn out as expected. I also know the feeling of not wanting to constantly wrench on a car yourself every weekend.

If you do go the leasing route, get on one of those 39 month leases (or whatever it is). You can get a brand new car every 3 years or so and if you go with a reliable vehicle, you wont have to touch a thing on it. Just don't go over the allotted miles.

 

I'm currently running a 285/70/17 BFG AT and it bothers be how narrow they are. I'm thinking about stepping up to a 305/65/17 Currently I have the ToyTec Ultimate kit installed set for 3" and I have 17x8 FX Pro wheels. Anyone running this size tire, regardless of wheel or lift combo? If so, please post pictures.

Painted the chrome emblems black plastidip so it's easy to take off in case I don't like it. Turned out pretty nice. Installed xenon depot 4300k with philips bulbs hid kit as well. Picked up my springs and trd wheels and bilsteins 5100 finally came in. Just waiting on the tires to complete the build.

 

Sorry, didn't see that you had addressed me in your post till just now. Yeah, Panzer as in the tank. Nothing a couple of beers and lots of triple checking your measurements can't solve

Went lake house hunting, which luckily enough required some off-roading. Then, we hit up a small town BBQ joint, yummy!

 

And all is right with the world!

 

I switched to the leasing model on the MINIs some years back (I've owned two, then leased two, all of it one at a time) because those BMWs are too expensive to maintain. Plus the dynamic of trying to be one car and ten bikes for a family of four meant we wanted to change cars every three years anyway.

I still lease the MINI but in bought the T4R because I intend to keep it.
