Towing in 4WD

Next week I'm towing a small boat (1500lbs) from LA to Seattle. I'll be driving hrough a few mountain passes and 4WD may be required in the snow. Any precautions I should be aware of when towing in the snow in 4WD?

Take it slow... Like 35 max! If you have to use 4wd that is...

 

Have a safe trip and remember you may be able to go 50+ in four whhel drive but you might not stop as quickly as you want!

I'd also say that the OP should try to leave as much room between them and other vehicles as possible, it will take them much longer to stop, and pulling the trailer they should try to stop as gradually as possible.

Also, be gentle when making steering and breaking inputs, typically you'll only have enough traction for one or the other, so try not to do both at the same time.

 

Thats true. Most people dont realize tow rating is also heavily associate with braking capability.

 

my boat trailer is a brake ... then the snow and rain is down the mountains a very 35MPH ....
the snow is the 4wd of the road ...

 

4wd is only going to get you moving. I’d just keep in 2wd unless it’s bad enough for snow on the ground. In 4wd you can go as fast as you need to.
