Dealers and pricing

Are there any dealers selling at MSRP and not adding in dealer fees? Checked out a dealer today here in Central Florida and they were adding $1000 - $3000 in add ons (tint, door guards, mats, etc) as well as a dealer fee of $900 to every 4Runner. For some popular models there was also a market adjustment of 5k. Is this what it's like everywhere? At least with the add ons you are getting something (even though it's probably overpriced), but the additional $900 dealer fee/profit sucks.

I bought my 2022 last year at this time, with actual delivery in February. My dealer offered an outstanding trade value on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Sport and MSRP for the new 4Runner and all the extras I ordered. At that time there were no 4Runners anywhere locally on lots, and I know some dealers were charging premiums to even take an order. But, it is my belief that there are plenty of dealers, like mine, who never gouged their customers. Good luck, hope you get what you want, at a price you can afford, in a timeframe that doesn't strain your patience. Of course, I'm all the way up here in PA, your mileage may vary!

 

Central Maine Toyota is at MSRP

 

I saw a 2023 Ford Bronco Rapture today on the lot at Sheehy Ford in Richmond, Va. The MSRP was 77K something and they had it marked the sticker with a 40K markup for dealer adjustment. So 117K total price. I'm still driving my 4runner.

 

West Herr Toyota here in Rochester, NY, is/was MSRP when I bought mine.

From what I've been reading regarding the build quality of those things, they ought to be priced more like $17K.

 

Just be patient. Below MSRP is right around the corner.

The caveat is MSRP will/is increasing due to rising production cost/inflation.

 

Yes indeed. MSRP for Limited up $850 from last March ($49,225 to $50,075) and delivery up $120 ($1,215 to $1,335) also. Some options also up. IF demand keeps up, not sure about any meaningful discounts.

update: MSRP is up again to $51,425 for the limited model, same delivery.

They may discount the MSRP…..after they increase it.

 

A buddy of mine just sent me a window sticker of a Solar Octane Pro 4R for $69,000 to include a $10,000 mark up.

 

I imagine they will discount msrp. I'm also going to say that its already starting. To get the deal done this weekend for me, the dealer had someone back out of a 4runner that had about $800 in additional port add ons (not dealer add on fluff) that I didn't want. Everything else was the same as i wanted even down to the color. I previously negotiated on a lesser equipped model to 41k otd including my trade and was supposed to get it mid January.

So they offered me the one that someone backed out on at the same price as i had originally negotiated. My contract shows that taxes are included into the selling price of the car and we originally agreed to msrp as selling price. So the msrp of the vehicle I bought this weekend was $49, 462. My selling price on the contract was the same msrp of $49,462, but it says that the selling price included $985 in taxes. Taxes were low because I had a trade so I only had to pay taxes on roughly 15k.

So when I interpret my contract, they lowered my msrp by almost a grand to include the sales taxes to get the deal done and buy a more expensive model at my original 41k otd negotiated on a cheaper model. Deals should only get better as more vehicles sit on the lot.

One catch was I have to finance with toyota. And they offered me 7.99% for tier 1 credit... that was Saturday and today I sent a check to toyota from navy federal to pay off the loan at 5%. They claim I had to keep the loan for 6 months, but when you read the fine print, if I payoff before 6 months, I MAY (not will) have to pay a $75 fee. Whooptidoo. I'll pay the fee and drop my payment by $57 a month.

 

Inflation has hit the automakers the same as it has hit us. It cost more for them to do anything just like groceries, building supplies, energy, shipping, labor…..etc…for you and me.

 

You are much more likely to get a discount off of MSRP if you have a trade. The dealer is double dipping and they'd rather not take the chance that the next customer doesn't have one. They are making out like fat cats. As far as lots filling back up and working major discounts into deals, I don't see that happening for a long long time, if ever again. Business models are changing and the cost of doing business is escalating at unprecedented levels in every sector. Paying high interest rates of 5%+ doesn't seem to be scaring anyone away.

 

Sadly many people think can I handle the payment instead of how much interest will I pay and what will the total cost be over X years.

Just bought a off road prem at MSRP from Don McGill Toyota in Houston.

 

I've talked to a bunch of dealers lately in NM, CO, UT, and AZ. Some are asking over MSRP, some are not. Just avoid the ones that want an ADM. Unfortunately most of the 4runners listed on their webpages are reserved by someone else so you may have to put in a reservation with a deposit to get what you want, and then wait for a couple months to get it. Deposits are typically $500 and refundable but make sure as each dealer seems to have their own policy on that.

My local dealer was asking a $2K ADM for an ORP, I told them I wasn't paying it and put in a reservation at another dealer an hour away. When I told them that, the local dealer agreed to remove the ADM and sell it to me at MSRP so I put in a reservation with them as well. They ended up finding me a 4Runner that was close to what I wanted first, so it looks like I'll be buying from them. Still waiting for the 4runner to arrive but hoping for end of January or so. Had to tell them to remove the "mandatory" window tint which they agreed to. Wanted to get rid of a few Port-Installed options since the vehicle hadn't reached port yet, but they said they can't do that as they are tied to the VIN once the VIN is generated.

I ended up working with a different salesperson than the one I started with, and that seemed to make a difference as well.

If anyone is looking in or near Colorado I'd talk to Caleb at Durango Motors - he seems legit and told me they will never sell over MSRP and the only add-on they wanted was Nitrogen. And when I laughed at that he said he could remove it no problem. They also didn't want a deposit and he kept in touch with me each week, letting me know what they had in their allocation that was close what I was looking for. I would have bought from him but my local dealer found my configuration first so I went with them.

Lots of the dealers try to add a bunch of "mandatory" fluff like theft protection, nitrogen, window tint etc and if you just say "I'm not paying for that" they'll let it go. Same with ADM in some cases. If they don't there are plenty of other dealers who will work with you.

And in this market it may pay to have multiple reservations as long as they are refundable, so you have a better chance to get what you want sooner.

 

It all depends on the dealer some dealers would hang up on you if you don't agree on ADM. I order an M3 6 months ago, and most in my states want a 20k markup. I ordered with MSRP 6 months ago and got it yesterday. also BMW still send me $500 and some goodies for waiting too long, Still today some dealers want 10k or 20k + . Keep searching you will get MSRP.

The dealer saying that they can’t change the port installed options from factory add-ons-VIN is a load of crap.I had no problem dumping some factory bling. If it can be added on at the port, it can be taken off at the port.
