OEM Tires

What are the opinions of the tires on 2018 runners? Mine are Dunlops, and searching on line fall about in the middle of "good"

 

Dunlops suck. My co-worker and myself have had failures without any reason.

 

what do you suggest? I have less than 1,000 miles and wondering if a tire co might swap?

 

Not a fan of either the Dunlops or the Bridgestones. I bought new Michelins the day after I bought the truck and sold the Dunlops on Craigslist for $400 within 48 hours. A tire place might give you a trade-in value on your tires, but I think you'll get more selling them yourself.

 

I disliked the stock tires (Dunlops) so badly I practically drove from the dealer to Discount Tire. Traded my stock new tires for stock size BFG KO2's. DT gave me $60 a tire for the Dunlops. The BFG's have worked well for me. Had one that wouldn't balance correctly and Discount handled it.

 

anyone heard of Yokohama Geolander A/T?

 

I had Dunlaps on a couple Tacoma's and they were terrible tires in wet conditions. I now run Michelin Defenders exclusively. Expensive but you make up for it on the far end, as they'll run for 80k miles. They're also super quiet.

 

i had my dealer install michelins before i even picked it up...no charge

 

You won't get anyone to "swap" if you've driven it away. Maybe when buying new if you wanted another brand even then you would probably pay the difference assuming of course you stepped up in price and quality.

 

My 2018 4runner TRD-OffRoad came with Bridgestone Dueller H/T's P265/70/R17. The tires did drive well on pavement and light snow covered gravel roads. But as the winter has progressed in our area with some larger snow falls on top of icy base the tires are TERRIBLE. Obviously we are talking extreme snow conditions and the H/T's are not designed with that in mind. That being said we purchased and just installed plain winter steel rims & Bridgestone Blizzack DM-V2 tires in the same size. The vehicle is actually at the tire shop right now so I'm hoping it will behave like a different beast when we get to driving it.

 

My experience with winter tires is that you’ll be thrilled with the snow and cold weather performance. I was always happy to switch them out when the weather warmed back up though. Pros and cons and if you have two sets you’ve got the best of both worlds.

 

Really?! Interesting, we're just at over 9000 km (5592 mi) so perhaps this is the reason the tires are behaving so poorly in snow/ice/rain. Now I'm probably going to have to look at considering new tires for summer weather.

 

Traded Dunlops in to local dealer, got $300 and bought Continental CrossContact lx20, almost as good as Michelin. dealer high on them and uses in. his personal vehicles. we'll see. I was concerned the Dunlops in wet and these have good reviews. The only knock is tread wear, some folks thought they wear too quickly. So, we'll see.

 

I replaced mine with only about 27k on them. I went with Cooper RTX, E load, factory size and love them so far. But like assholes, so are tire opinions.
If you drive in environments where a puncture is likely upgrade them. Factory tires are fine if you lightly off road with them.
For example, in the 27k miles they were on my 4Runner they operated great in the sand, mud and snow. It was the cactus here in Texas that did them in. I got numerous punctures
near the sides of the tires from them. Obviously punctures near the sides are a bitch to deal with and could be dangerous.

 

Cactus can puncture tires?!! I drove through El Paso a couple years ago and checked out a few spots along the highway and they did look sharp... but I would have never thought they'd puncture tires. Wow. OBVs we don't have Cactus here lol

 

My 2015 Trail came with Dunlops and I hated them. Just recently bought Goodyear Duratracs and love them!

 

I got DunFLOPs on 2012 Tacoma and my 2017 4Runner...didn’t even wait till 10k before I swapped them both out to Michelin LTXs. On my Tacoma my wife chalked it up to me just being picky UNTIL we had to take my 4Runner out in a mild snow storm. After 10 minutes and the dash board lighting up like Christmas she told me to get the Michelin’s. IMHO the LTXs have out performed any AT tire I have ever used in light to moderate snow, ice, and rain. For deep snow they will get you home but there are better tires out there. I am a very conservative driver...meaning I drive slow. OP you need to figure out what your needs are...do you Offroad a lot or drive on the highway? If you reside where you have long winters, winter tires are going to be the best choice. I do high highway mileage and dirt paths so I don’t need anything more than my Michelin’s. I know they are a high end tire (probably the best in its category) but they are worth every penny!

 

Great tires. I replaced my stock Bridgestone Dueler HT's for these. mountain snow rated .

 

Michelin LTX AT2 or Defenders and don't look back.

 

I've used them before, its a good A/T tire but I prefer the Genera Grabber ATX. Cheaper than the geolanders and a better all around tire. People also love the Falken Wildpeaks around these parts.

 

I put the same model Blizzaks on my 2021. (The third vehicle I've put Blizzaks on.) Trust me on this, you won't find anything better - especially on hard pack and ice.

 

Dedicated snows are the way to go if you want to run two sets. Many plows around here run Michelin Defenders all year round and do excellent.

 

I agree. General Grabbers were an option for me as well..........but Yokohama was running a sale in November buy 3 get 1 free and I had to act fast!
I am quite happy with the ride, soft and smooth for an AT tire, plus they are snow rated tires and I need that for New England winters.
