I have a 22 ORP stock. I decided to go bigger like 285. I have been doing research and narrowed it down to these two. My main use like 95% is on pavement road. So my top priority is comfort, quiet and look. I live in PNW so I need to take into consideration of rain, snow condition. I feel they are both good at those.

Can anyone give me suggestion on which one is better or they are pretty much apple to apple? To begin with AT2 is only 43 lbs. compared with 50 lbs. for AT3W. Would that be the deal breaker to go with AT2? Also AT2 looks slightly smaller than AT3W, will that make it look less beefy?

    Thanks.

Falken at3w, are great tires. The perform well on and off the road, and are great in the snow. They are just heavy. And heavy tires/wheels will kill performance and mpg.

Look at the maxxid razr at in 285/70/17. It has a more aggressive tread design, 43lbs and the reviews are excellent(check out the thread on tacomaworld).

And easy weight to offset the weight of the falkens is to get a lighter wheel.

I've had the P Metric Falken WP ATW3 285/70/17 on TRD Pro wheels for over two years now, great tires. Like you, 95% (probably even more) is on the pavement. They did great the three times I hit the snow and did great the handful of times I hit the dirt, and they do great around town. Comfortable tire for sure.

This Maxxid Razr looks pretty good on paper! I have not seen much discussion in the 4R forum. I really like the weight and the tread. Between this and the Falken, it is a hard choice.

I currently have the Firestone and am actually installing the Falkens this coming week. Same size as you, too.

I really liked the Firestones. I have used them on a lot of trucks with very good results but as this current set nears end of life I just wanted to run something else.

I had previously had the Falkens on a Tacoma and I liked them as well. I was going to wait for the AT/MT hybrid (the RT, maybe?) but there was no ETA on that so I ordered the AT3s.

From experience with both, they are similarly good on pavement, in the wet, and on hard pack dirt. They are similarly meh in heavy snow, not great but they get along. They both aren't great in thick mud. They both balanced just fine.

I never gave that much thought to the weight and they were on different vehicles so I can't offer a comparison on fuel use because of different weight.

The Falkens look a lot better IMO.

The Destinations were a little more quiet.

    Nothing else comes to mind.

@yany007 if you have considered Toyo OC AT3 and crossed it out of the list, love to know why? Is it been 47lbs it was out of the list?

I'm just trying to capture info whats bad about Toyos. :)

If it will make you guys feel better, my 265 LT Nitto RG’s weigh almost 55 lbs each! Pretty crazy. I only shed about 3 lbs per tire when I removed the 285’s.

Weight is a big deal to me. One of the reasons I love BFG KO2 as the best all rounder. 285/70R17C is 51lbs where the 4runner owners "darling" tire is same 51lbs in SL.

But Nitto RG is a different league.

    I just went from a 42lb 285/70R17 (Firestone Destination A/T's) to a 51lb 285/70R17 (BFG KO2).

It's still early, but initial results looks like I went from an average of 16.6mpg to 16.3mpg with the switch.

So if my maths is correct:

    42x4=168lbs
    51x4=204lbs

    204-168=36 additional lbs

    0.3mpg lost / 36lbs = 0.0083mpg lost/lb

This means you would loose 0.0083 mpg for every pound of tire you add.

    Did I do that right?

By the way, I loved the Destinations.

So far the KO2's are really nice too but I'm reserving judgment until I get them out on a wet highway.

How can there be a 10-15 lb difference between two different manufacturers of the same size tire? I can see a few pounds, but I don’t get it.

I’m looking at 265/70/17 Toyo AT3, Grabber ATx and Wildpeaks AT3.

would really like to keep weight down but Wildpeaks seem to have edge in wet traction. Thinking if I get TRD Pro wheels that would shave about 6 lbs off per tire vs stock wheels and help cancel out some weight. Just hate to have to get rid of a new set of wheels without using ‘em.

May be because Load C vs SL? and more tread depth?

Just curious where you get that info? I was checking on trail4Runner and both seems to be at same weight.

Your probably right, maybe more plys too. I’m running E load also. Overkill for most but since I traverse jagged lava rocks on the trails I frequent, I wanted the added protection.

If you have some free time can you post a pic of ply construction of you tire, the section that shows how many ply on main and how many ply on side wall? I thought I saw something awesome with those RGs when I wheel with another Jeep running Nitto RGs (But they were 35s).

Spent an exhausting amount of time on google and really hard to find weights of these wheels. More so the TRD ORP. The TRD Pro wheels seem to all have reports oh weight around 25-27lb range.

TRD ORP wheel weight I can’t find except in that article on Trail4Runner the author says 25lbs (which I was super happy to read) but the. In the comments section someone corrects him and says they actually weigh 31lbs.

hard to tell who’s right, I found nothing else on google. I’m about to call Toyota parts department and see if they know..

When he's talking about the "forged wheel" is he referring to the Trail wheel?

Go to one of the dealership sites, then parts, then wheels they usually give the weight with the description of the wheel. Hope this helps.

I don't know if .3 mpg savings (based on above math) is worth all this extra effort of cross referencing tires, getting new wheels, etc. Probably just get what you like and eat the .3 mpg!!!

The TRD Pro wheel is 17x7 and has an offset of +4.

The TRD Offroad wheel is 17x7.5 and has an offset of +15.

SR5 wheel is 17x7 with an offset of +15.

None of the current stock offerings reflect the stats he gives for "forged wheels." Maybe he's talking about something aftermarket since he mentions faux beadlocks in the line below that one??

I thought it would be more of a hit, TBH.

I'm pleasantly surprised at the moment.

*Disclaimer - these are preliminary numbers that require a bit more time/testing.

Is that a stock suspension? Any frame or wheel housing adjustments for that? The stock tires are P265/70R17 any issues with the 285s so far?

No issues. In fact, just did 150 nasty snow miles, and in typical MeefZah asshole fashion I was the guy passing everyone in the unplowed left lane at double their speed while they all dreamed of seeing me crash and burn. Also pulled out my wife's stuck co worker and had good traction on snow and ice.

Suspension is 2.5" front and 1.5" rear lift.
