I know this is going to sound crazy...BUT for many it was the gas cap, the o-ring goes bad and stops sealing and will trigger the CEL and VSC lights, replacing the gas cap usually solves the issue, you can however before buying a new gas cap can try either flipping the o-ring over and or applying a little Vaseline to the o-ring to help it seal properly to see if that is what's causing the issue.

I hope this solves your issue.

The gas cap will trigger the CEL and anytime the CEL is triggered it will also disable the VSC for safety reasons, there could be others causes for these lights to come on but the gas cap is the first thing to try to resolve the issue before trying more expensive repairs.

Mine comes loose as soon as you turn it to the left...BUT it does take a little bit of pressure to turn it, it shouldn't be too easy but also not to hard to turn but it shouldn't come loose on it own.

I was about to post this issue and you did. I have the same issue, mine is 4th gen SR5. I've read some threads, youtube videos watched and it seems like the check engine light causes it sometimes, however, without check engine light VSC OFF and VSC TRAC are still on. I also saw a video where they fix it with a paper clip, they connect 2 pins that are supposed to reset the system error causing those lights.

Does anyone know if this actually solves the issue? or it's just a way to clear the lights out?

    Thanks,

The lights may go off on their own or you may need to have them reset/clear the codes.

What you're referring too is called doing a "Zero Point Calibration" to reset the system, it's usually done with a SST(Special Service Tool) by Toyota Technician/Mechanic, but it can be done DYI with the jumper/paperclip and a certain process, but you must know what you're doing to get it right, also which pins in the ODBII port you're "jumping" is different on earlier 4TH Gens than later ones, do your research if you go that route to DIY the ZPC.

Thanks, I might as well get that tool. As long as it actually solves the issues. I am not just to clear the lights, I want the issue to be fixed.

You can't buy the Toyota SST, it's only available to Toyota dealerships, you might be able to buy a aftermarket tool that will do the ZPC, but most DIYers just use the paperclip and make sure they do the procedure correctly.

Anyone can turn the lights off by simply disconnecting the battery for a few seconds, which will reset the computer/codes..but it will not solve any issues/codes that may have caused the lights to trigger and they usually will come back on, just do the ZPC following guidance from the forum topics or videos showing how to do it.
