Hello there! I'm a longtime lurker here, but new to posting on the forum. I've had my 4runner for about 2 years now and I'm finally getting around to making a few changes. Please excuse my ignorance, because lots of this is new to me... After scrolling and searching for awhile I can't seem to find an answer for this question: I'm wanting to swap my 20" wheels for 17" and I'm not concerned much about the rubbing questions for 265/65/17s, but I'm curious about the offset differences? This picture are the wheels+tires that I'm interested in. I understand my stock 20s to have a 15mm offset & the wheels I like have 30mm offset. So after calling Discount Tire and as I understand it the +15mm offset difference would mean I don't clear the calipers? However, when I call the seller (great reviews online) they tell me it wouldn't make a difference and I'd be fine. Any thoughts? Should I just stick to a set of wheels with 15mm offset?

    Thanks for your help!

I too was interested in the Tacoma wheels but had the same questions as you. I decided after a set of 5 off road premium wheels became available on Craig’s List for $500 that I wasn’t up for experimenting and went the easy route with those as the offset is the same as the 20”. The
backspace is different at 4.8 Vs 4.5 for the 20” but the rims are wider at 7.5” Vs 7” for the 20” wheels. I had a minor rub in reverse wheels cocked right as it appears the liner on the drivers side is slightly different than the passenger side. I got a heat gun and pushed the liner out slightly. Took only 15 minutes or so 2CC98E04-85A4-43CA-9F3B-F155AB88B4CE.jpg to do. Good luck with your decision.

Offset may be easy for some to figure out, but I have a hard time with that math. I would also stick to the TRDOR take offs, they are a dime a dozen (rather, $500 for a set of 4, usually) because so many people like to upgrade their wheels. I have the same on my LE and think they look great; if you are choosing another wheel, I would find someone else who has already put them on their rig to see what the results are.

These are very helpful responses, thank you both! That was the decision I had come to after those phone calls and now I just need a cheap set of TRD takeoffs to come up near me there are some a few hours away for $650-1k but I’m gonna be patient to see if any come up closer to me maybe after people get Black Friday deals, etc. Thanks again for the advice!

Don’t forget about the spare tire/rim if you are coming off 20” inchers. The overall wheel diameter differences are slight between 20 and 17” but if you have a limited AWD it could cause problems not having the exact size diameter rims if you ever need the spare.

    Here’s an online offset calculator.

Any idea what are the chances of keeping the mud flaps using 285/70R17 (smaller size 32.76" tires) with TRD Pro wheels?

Assuming - Stock UCA used (so may not push the wheel forward like SPC UCA), Fender liner is pushed for front rubbing, understand that TRD Pro wheels not meet minimum width for 285s. Smaller size 32.76" tires used (not using full 33in 285/70R17s)

Only checking front tire clearance with factory mud flap.

Hi, I have a question for you since you have been through this. When switching from 20” to 17” wheels, did you have to get alignment? I’m thinking of getting set of winter wheels in 17” trd wheels for my limited, and getting alignments twice a year would be a lot of hassle.

My apologies for the late response. I didn’t notice my message. I always get an alignment when putting on a new set of tires. I think when starting with a new tire you don’t want to prematurely ruin or wear them unevenly. In my opinion not worth not doing them to save a couple of bucks. Get the alignment and then you are sure you are starting off clean.
