Cooper discoverer at3 4s - Can you help with your experiance

Hi folks,

First of all sorry, I know there are lot of tire make model specific threads, but trying to see if I can find info on this specific tire.

I'm thinking to try (not finalized) Cooper discoverer at3 4s. I'm in a doubt with Toyo Open Country AT3 vs Cooper discoverer at3 4s. Cooper discoverer at3 4s been very light weight and having more sipping is very tempting (I know there are tires with siping but no 3PMSF rating. 3PMSF rating is a must. If the rubber compound is not rated for low temps having sipping is useless for me).

I have found few things when I search, but want to learn more and your personal experience on trails with them.

What I found so far -

 

I have the cooper at3 4s on my 22 in a 265. I don’t have many miles on them yet but I have almost 150k on 3 sets of the lt version on my Silverado. I’ve never had a better on road tire as far as mileage and wet traction. I don’t see much snow or Offroad in the truck.

 

Also the actual size mounted under the weight of the 4r us more like 31.75"(2857017)

 

Is there a reason as to why you have doubt for Toyo Open Country AT3? I run them stock size and love them. They are aggressive but quiet.

 

The at3 do run small. The 4s and the lt6 were under 31.5. The lt10 I have now are bigger

 

I've heard they don't last, at 30k performance takes a dive.

 

I ran AT3 4S on my '14 grand cherokee. Wife took it over when I bought the 4runner. They cupped and then got super loud as a result but the jeep dealership that put them on had just gotten a road force balancer machine and didn't know how to use it. They rebalanced later when they figured it out but damage was done.

That being said, they were a great road tire (dry/wet/light snow) but never tried them out offroad. They have very high ratings on tirerack.com from what I've seen.

 

Just a 2lb advantage on the Coopers at 45lbs vs Toyo at 47lbs.

Minor - Have bit more sipping for on pavement snow and ice.

Other than that same tread depth 14/32, same speed 118mph, same height 32.76in.

We've run Cooper AT3 4S' on two 4runners now (255/75/17). Performance has always been stellar and I'd be confident taking them anywhere. I'd be okay with slightly more aggressive sidewalls. They don't have quite as much rim protection bead as some others which makes our SCS' appear to have a little more pronounced lip on the outer edge.

We put trail terrain T/A on the GX and I actually really like them so far as well. Can't go wrong with the Cooper's. I'd buy them again.

 

I don’t have 30k on mine but I have heard many get the Toyos close to 50k. I also heard that after 30k Cooper AT3 do get loud. It may just be where and how these tires are driven.

 

That a great feedback, thank you. Did you mean they could loose the bead from the wheel more than others because the bead is more smooth? That would be a concern as I run pretty low on winter wheeling. I will be running on stock TRD Pro wheels until I decide on a good suspension lift and wheels (which won't happen for some time).

 

I just had these put 275/70 17’s on my 2020. Have about 400 miles on them. Love them so far. Quiet, fuel mileage hasn’t shown any change. Haven’t taken them off pavement yet.

 

No, not at all. There simply isn't as thick of a raised 'bead' along the outside face of the tire where it meets the rim (nothing to do with the tire slipping/dismounting/etc.). This makes my rims look like they stick out from the tire slightly. This will vary depending on your particular wheel choice as well. The SCS have that black outer band that adds to the visual effect in my scenario. I would not worry any more about airing down with the Cooper's than any other tire.

That is something I've never thought about. Thanks for sharing. That's a good point to search. I'll be running on stock TRD Pro wheel for now.

 

We have the same size on our 2020 ORP, they have about 20K on them, and as with the other Coopers we ran/run, they have performed very well on wet, dry, icy, snow covered roads. They get checked/rotated on a normal basis and are holding up very well.

 

I’m on my 3rd set on the Tacoma, and my wife has them on her Outback. Great traction all around, and does super well in snow. I drove from PA to VA during a blizzard in the Taco, almost 150 miles, and they did awesome. No issues with cupping or loudness after a certain mileage either.

That looks good. If possible share some good pictures. I will see if Discount tire has them in stock to have a look in person.

 

Be advised- In 2021 Cooper Tire was bought out by Good for a year (Good Year) Tire. I used to run Coopers, but since Good Year took them over, I’m done with them. I hate Good Year tires and will refuse to support them in any way.

I bought a set of Cooper AT3 4s in 255/70/18 for my daughter’s 2022 Wrangler JL back in July (It came with those Dueler H/T’s) I’m always asking about the performance. Her feed back Is, they feel more planted on the highway, just as quiet as the Duelers. And she’s on the beach every weekend and has had no problems airing down, and no problems driving in the sand. I’m thinking about these or the Toyo Open Country A/T 3’s for the 4runner also.

 

That's very nice to hear. We have couple of sand options but thats about it. For me its really tough to pick between these Cooper and Toyos. Very slim weight difference and sipping on thread difference. Since Toyo is a known performer very hard to decide.

I wish if there is anyone using Coopers on rocky terrain to comment. Here in CO its mostly loose rocky terrain. That is why I absolutely love KO2 Load C (i tried KO2 Load E, but its was too much for a lighter 4R) . But this time trying to see if I can go with a lighter tire option.

 

Right? I'm glad I open this thread. I never thought or had any clue until dosomeplowin shared the above point. That was a big learning point for me.

 

Thank you @dosomeplowin for your info on the bead. I had a look in person today and I think I may not go with the Coopers. I will check on my next choice of Toyo Open country AT3. Unless I find something bad.

 

Not to add to the confusion but I’m not sure the rim protection bead is a factor on this tire. Look at the photos above. The sidewall profile offers plenty of protection I think.

 

I did not feel comfortable about the bead of the Cooper, I was worried since I'm already taking a risk mounting on narrow TRD Pro wheel that does not meet minimum width requirement for 285s.

 

What is it about Goodyear tires that I don’t know?

 

Yeah, I would not be worried about tire performance or losing a bead in the least. I was purely complaining in vanity.
