Xres replacement

I have a leaking right rear on my xres, it’s making a horrible clunking with every bump. My husband won’t put xres back on it if I can get him to realize it needs to be replaced. I want the same ride as my Toyota limited rides. I’ve seen so many say get bilestin shocks and stuff to replace it. I know it rides different than a 4Runner sr5 does. I want to get the same ride but not sure what will get me same ride. I am never going off road. I’ve used my 4wheel drive once or twice. Need ideas.

 

With my experience its not going to. I could not find anything good as XREAS on pavement. To me looks like all these suspension focus on off-road drive ability yet good ride on pavement. Even the best off-road comfort suspension I tried the ELKA 2.5DC did not ride good as XREAS on pavement.

In my opinion replace XREAS if pavement is your only requirement. Also remember all these fancy suspension Fox/ELKA/King/etc... have shorter service intervals as well.

On a side note make sure you exercise your center diff once a month, else the actuator will get stuck.

 

Well crude. I was thinking of getting my husband to replace the shock and the part that has the fluid in it but not sure what they call it. Toyota dealer quoted me a big amount and right one started leaking around 38,000 miles, now I’m at 60,000. I’m pretty sure he won’t let me get a new system. Espically since it never lasted long.I think something must have just happened cause my whole back in is making clunking and rattling noises now.

 

Why didn't the dealer fix it if it was leaking at 38k? That is well within the warranty, and I would say if it is documented, then even at 60k, only being 3 years old you should try to get toyota to foot the bill.

 

Your best compromise will probably be to get 4 new twin tube shocks and use the springs you have. The sr5 and trail factory shocks or something like Dobinsons comfort ride.

 

I was out of factory warranity and Apex warranity wouldn’t fix it cause it’s matenience. Even though it’s leaking. Dealer only gave me $100 off 2000 and something. I called and argued with them but they won’t cover it.

 

See what you can trade your limited in for on a new TRD sport model which has Xreas you love and start from scratch. Kidding sort of but maybe it makes sense given the environment.

 

Aftermarket warranty no go.

 

Ha that isn’t gonna happen lol. I’m still paying on this one. My son wanted me to buy a trd but I didn’t like it.

 

This might tempt someone to get aftermarket suspension. I have Ironman Foam Cell pro. But I will tell you, its no where near comfy as stock XREAS.


Compared to stock TRD Pro


In snowy days like yday and tomorrow TRD is no where near my choice to drive especially I have to take a U turn to my kiddos school. With Limited's Fulltime 4wd with center diff unlocked I can turn without driving over the curb or reverse and correct my turn. With part time 4wd I cannot do tight u turns.

 

Would you guys know if the springs can be replaced on the front shocks without disengaging the XREAR banjo connected pipes. Would like to keep the XREAS system but just change the springs.

 

It's doable, but you'll probably have a hard time finding someone willing to work on the car while the shock is still attached to the vehicle. They'd have to use Macpherson two-spring compressor clamp method.

But why do you want to replace just the springs? Those will outlast the shock itself.

 

I'm pretty sure I have these clamps. Was wondering if there is enough room to just disconnect the shock on top and slide the compressed spring out. If can not find anyone might have to try myself.
I know its the opposite of what everyone else is doing but would like to give the 4 Runner about 1 to 1.5" drop vs. lift. There is no springs that one is able to buy with a drop but someone has directed my to a company that does custom springs for suv's and trucks and allegedly they will be able to accommodate.

 

Gotcha.. it shouldn't be too difficult. You'll have little room but it is doable.

Some have used the car as the weight to compress the springs in order to take the top hat off. Search for it. There's a youtube video I believe someone posted doing this.

 

I haven't tried this but I wouldn't think there is room on the top to slide the spring out, I don't see how you remove the spring without removing the strut entirely and I don't know how to do that without disconnecting it from XREAS.
