Another CV axle post . . . sorry

have 80k mi on my 2018 and hearing two or three clicks from driver's side front wheel which stop after I get going but only when wheel is turned full stop to the right and reversing - don't hear it any other time - CV axle going out? how serious is this if I don't hear it any other time than doing a hard turn in reverse? Time for a replacement?

 

Put your front up on lift/jack stands. If you can wiggle the wheel around besides just rotating it, its your wheel bearing. If you cant there, but you can wiggle around your CV axle, its that.

To clarify, does the sound change at all when in 4wd vs 2wd?

 

appreciate the response -- don't have the necessary equipment for that -- haven't heard in in 4wd, so guess that's the next thing to do -- the boot is in great shape and don't see any grease anywhere, dry as a bone -- and like I said, it only makes the noise on a hard turn in reverse - just hoping that i'm not about to have to drop a thousand bucks on getting this fixed

 

also, when you say wiggle the CV axle -- you mean grab a hold of it and try to move it, correct?

 

Yep literally grab the axle shaft and try to shake it. Its designed to only rotate and flex in a rather specific range, if its doing anything else there are problems afoot.

 

Spot on - had the left side replaced this year. Shop installed a used Toyota CV. Saved a buck vs new or remanufactured. I was told the off brand parts will leak at the grease boot - and make a huge mess.

 

just wondering if I'm being too OCD about this -- just bought my runner three months ago and always on the lookout for something going wrong. Don't hear it driving forward/turning at any speed -- only in a hard-over turn in reverse

 

What are you running for tires and wheels? That's a very specific scenario, I'm wondering if your tire is maybe just slightly grabbing something while in that position.

Last vehicle I had that needed a CV made the clicking in fwd and reverse.

 

my runner is an '18 Off-Road with standard size wheels and tires -- Falken WildPeaks -- so far I'm of the opinion that I want to keep it as OEM as possible, but seeing all the great things people here have done to their rigs . . . I'm getting a little jealous

 

It's addictive and this forum doesn't help! I have new full skid package and lift/UCAs sitting in the garage (delivered last week) waiting for install! I will paint and mount the skids but need to find someone to install lift because I don't want to mess too much with KDSS and don't have the time. Just have to decide which 285/70s I'm gonna put on.

Stock SIZE wheels and tires are only part of the equation. If wheels aren't stock (different offset/backspacing), especially with aggressive wildpeaks, sounds like maybe tire rub in reverse at full lock. I would check the mud flaps, bumper, and fender liner up front to see if the tires are rubbing

 

are you sure it’s not just rubbing the mud flap or fender liner?

 

fairly sure it's not the mud flap because it seems like I can feel it through the steering wheel, but I'm not really sure but again, don't feel it going forward - I'm thinking maybe it's a brake pad or something shifting because of the full stop turn
