Change Transmission Fluid at 60k?

Hey there forum, my "17" TRD Pro is getting ready to hit 60k, should I change the transmission fluid at this service interval?

100% yes. I have my own schedule for the most part. Its served me well on my 03 Tundra as she is still strong at 315K miles (bought with 50k on it in 07) with no leaks, or any mechanical issues...
7500 oil/ filter, 15k tranny, 30k diffs, 45k transfer. All drain and fill.
Im doing the same schedule on my runner. I just cant see running the same tranny oil for 30k miles.

 

Check that. I do my oil on my truck every 5k. Runner is 7500...

 

Yeah. Just use the tranny's pump to do it if you are doing it yourself.

I would base it off how you drive. I do 99% highway driving.

I do:

engine oil 10k

transfer case 60k

diffs, tranny, radiator 100k

brake 2 years.

 

We had a bearing go out on my wife's 4th gen 4runner at 100k miles. I never changed the fluid on it. That was a $2500 lesson for a new rear chunk. I've been religiously changing the diffs and transfer case on my vehicles at 30k since then. Much cheaper than buying replacing or fixing the diff. Even if you have the ability to replace / fix it yourself, it's much less work to change the fluid regularly.

 

I follow this Toyota Technician on you tube ( The Car Care Nut ). He is always praising how good 4Runners are, and gives great advice on how to keep them running. I believe he stated to change the transmission at 60K. Stated it will probably last to 100k ok, but has seen problems after that because they waited to change the transmission fluid at 100k instead of doing it sooner.

 

I believe the manual says 60k for heavy use, and doesn't give a number for normal use. Had my 2019 done at 90k.

 

my 4runner just hit 100k and I bought it at 90k miles, I have no idea if the transmission fluid was ever done, should it do it now?

your 4runner is towing then around 40-60K miles .... replaced it transmission fluid ...
the forum members are flushing transmission fluid ,, 120K miles with no towing .. drop the pan clean the filter/pan ...
the 107F-114F temp is filling the plug port , fill it and then the port is dripping it out in the temp fluid with the temp...
drive train fluids .transfer/frt/rear diff 30-50K miles ...also grease the drive shafts and yokes 10K miles ..

many form members are around the transmission fluid is 150-175K no change, then the shifting is not working correctly ...
then flush out the fluid ,clean the filter pan , and many have a great shifting issue ..looks great...

GM has a transmission , the fluid is a filter mesh/cloth ...the metal dust is in the fluid ..then the vehicles are 40-50K miles .
the filter is replaced and a lot of metal dust in the filter/pan ...GM 100K miles are damaged, transmission fluid is around 100-120K miles ..

 

I changed mine at 75k.

I don't tow but I'm your typical normal driver. Mostly onroad driving with a mix of highway/city. Loaded up for a trip once every couple of months. Occasional offroad trips, ect....

I did a Blackstone analysis at 75k and they said the oil and trans metals looked great and I could have gone longer on the change interval if I wanted to.

 

I'm assuming you use the OEM fluid for your tranny, but what brands/viscosities are you using for your diffs and transfer case?

 

I did not clean the pan or screen filter.

Just a simple drain and fill.

 

From what I’ve read, that seems to be the accepted practice.

 

Trans oil every 15k holy shit.

Might as well excessively change brake fluid every 10k too.

 

Toyota many did not drop the pan and clean the filter screen ...toyota owners did some pan drop and the pan is a very good amount of small particles .
my GM vehicles did a lot of metal dust in the pan and the filter ...

 

I'm not too worried about it. The reliability history of this transmission is pretty stellar.

The tranny oil that came out of mine looked acceptable to me.

Blackstone analysis confirmed my observations.

If it makes you feel better to drop the pan and clean the filter screen, I fully support your decision to do so.

If it was me doing that job, I'd be more worried about creating a leak than particulates not coming out during the drain.

 

well all my GM transmissions are a lot of fluid debris [gray] around 25-40K miles ..the Toyota 4runners did around 80K to 100K tranny fluid looks very good..

so you did the lab and the fluid is very good ..

 

Yes, OEM Tranny fluid. Type IV in the Tundra, WS in the Runner. 75W-90 Synthetic for diffs in both, Lucas Oils. I used Royal Purple 80W-90 in Transfer Case the first ( so far only) change. The Runner barley has 50K miles on it. The Tundra is 2wd...

 

I think I'm going with a PML pan at 60K as well.

 

Talking about transmissions, any one using transmission coolers? What is the best, long lasting, trouble free (automatic switching), reliable transmission cooler? If I'm not mistaken I saw 214F in winter weather. Not sure if my new 2 spot lights blocking the air flow and existing full skids contributing it. It might be a good idea to start looking transmission cooler? I may be not need it but they seems to be pretty cheap and easy install?

 

I thought our vehicles had a cooler built into the radiator?

 

They do like most autos but sometimes they are not enough to keep it cool like when towing or slow crawling on obstacles.
