I live in Iowa, so rust on frames is an issue for Toyotas in my experience. I used cosmoline on a relatively new Tacoma It has held up amazingly well through a couple of winters. The frame still looks new.

I am looking at a new T4R now and want to take care of the frame for the long-haul, too. The dealer is offering to use MP Under Coat, No. 770-MP supplied by Wilson Distributor Service. I am wondering if anyone has real-world experience with this undercoating product and can give it a review?

I have heard plenty of “Dealer undercoat is a ripoff” comments, so please just actual product experience comments!

    TIA!

Fluid film inside of the frame. Nothing but paint outside. Touch up paint on underside welds and nicks with any frame spray can paint before each cold season.

Fluid Film since day one on my 4Runner and Tacoma. Trucks get treated inside/outside the frame in the fall, I do an exterior touchup after the winter. I will occasionally hit the front of the rear diff cover cover and fuel tank skid plate midway through the winter as this area tends to get the worst of it. Switched to Wool Wax this year. Goes on thicker, sprays easier in my opinion though and lasts longer.

Stay away from any rubberized undercoating.

I would very much stay away from any rubberized undercoating no matter who manufactures it. The problem with this type of product is twofold. First, although it does prevent corrosion (if applied properly), it does not stop corrosion. Your brand-new vehicle will have at least a little bit of corrosion underneath it just from shipping it from Japan and undercoating over it will not stop it. (It will hide it though.)

Second, some folks (Ziebart for instance) offer annual re-sprays. The real reason for these annual visits to your Ziebart dealer is to arm twist you into buying more services. The more devious problem is that they simply spray new undercoat over the old stuff - and any rust that has already started. Over the years, this will lead to layers and layers of undercoat covering - and sometimes accelerating - corrosion. Nope, hard pass - and this is based on personal experience.

What would I recommend? I'm a big fan of Fluid Film, Woolwax and Waxolyl products. Check this thread out:
