    Hello,

New to the forum with a 2022 SR5 Premium.

Have owned several Lexus GX460 and writing concerning the following...

Does the 4Runner have an engine oil cooler and also transmission fluid cooler?

I was using my OBDFusion yesterday with outside temp in the mid 40s and the engine coolant was running at 190F, while the ATF #1 was only around 138F and the engine oil temp was also 138F.

Just surprised on how low the temps were on the tranny and engine oil.

    Thank you!!

Engine oil: Yes but it's part of the oil filter housing and uses coolant.

Tranny cooler: No aux unit, just the one in the radiator.

Thank you. I was just surprised how low the engine oil temp was after a long run while the coolant was in the 190F range, the oil never got above 140F.

Your oil temp reading doesn’t sound correct.

As far as I’ve researched there is no oil temperature sensor on the 5th Gen 4Runner.

BTW, with a fully warmed up engine the oil is usually about 50 degrees F above the temperature where the thermostat opens. The ideal oil sump temperature range is 215F to 250F.

I'm using OBDFusion and able to view the engine oil temp.

I've never seen under normal loads on this V6 and V8 GX oil temps that high where in live, even in 95F summers.

This engine just seems to run on the cool side. Like I said, the temp was 45F and this was on the highway.

As far as I know, these don't have an oil temp sensor or even an oil pressure sensor more than an on/off switch.

I'm also pretty sure there is no oil temp sensor.

There was a few other thread with people using scan gauge and same thing.

Well, I'm pulling the temp and it shows engine oil temp sensor. Understand if there is not an actual temp sensor, but wonder what OBDFusion is pulling from since the engine oil and ATF 1 temps are different.

Yes people with the scan guage we pulling numbers but it never changed.

Guarantee your engine oil isn't 140 after fully warming up. External cooler won't even keep it that low.

I have a 25 row engine oil cooler on my Z and it keeps my temp at 180F - 190F. I have a thermostatic sandwich plate that allows my oil to reach operating temperature before allowing oil into the cooler. Prior to the cooler, I would easily hit 220F

138 F would be a good temp. for the trans., 138 F on the engine oil is NOT good. Engine oil temp. should be above the boiling point of water (212 F) to rid the engine of any moisture condensation that may occur during initial startup and operating and at cooldown. I'm not sure if there are any sensors for the temps of engine and trans., the temps are able to be read on the GM products we used to run, at least the trans. temp was.

I use the “Car Scanner” app. Seems to work fine but I often wonder where/how it’s pulling info. Or if the connection profile is making any errors.

Just kind of seems you have to check what people are saying about whatever connection profile you’re using. And then look at the data to make sure it makes sense.

Soo…if it’s giving you bad oil temp info, is the rest of the data correct?

I think my scangauge has the ability to read from two separate transmission temperature sensors, one at the pan and the other somewhere more internal to the transmission (torque converter?). Maybe your OBD2 reader is mistakenly labeling the second transmission temperature sensor as an engine oil temp sensor? That would sort of align with your perception that engine oil and transmission oil are at similar temps.

    Edit:

I'm going off of @j cat 's post in this thread.

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/scangauge-ii-has-anyone-used-one-for-the-5th-gen.8951/

He apparently programmed the scanguage to read from both transmission temp sensors.

a lot of these apps let you pick what parameters you want to display on a “dashboard”. On car scanner, you select from the parameters in the profile and you can label them whatever you like to show up on a dashboard Like this: upload_2022-10-15_19-12-45.jpg
But if the profile being used doesnt read engine oil temp, and you select oil temp as a dashboard item, then the dashboard should not report a value at all (maybe dashed lines to indicate “no data”).

my guess is that what is labeled as engine oil on the OPs dashboard displayed by the app, was mistakenly associated with a different parameter.
