I've recently had a 3 inch lift installed along with having 285/70/17 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss mounted to my stock ORP wheels. I'd like to add a same size spare tire just in case I have a flat. I understand I can run a smaller size spare 265-70/17 up front in a pinch if I had to.
    Question
    1. Will a 285 wide tire fit the stock spare rim or is that too wide?
    2. Will a 285 wide tire fit in the same underneath spot as the original 265 spare?

Eventually I'd like to find another stock ORP wheel to use as a spare, but currently I do not have one.

    Thank you for your input.

I can't confirm about the rim, but 285s do fit underneath.

If you check in the marketplace here, I think there was a guy getting rid of some off-road wheels. And, there always seems to be somebody selling them.

I inquired about that wheel and shipping was almost the cost of the wheel. I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the suggestion. If the 285 fits the stock spare wheel I'll be OK until I locate one closer to Florida.

    1) I haven't check if the spare tire rim meets the minimum width of 7.5in to fit 285s. But since spare tire is for "Just in case" scenario I mount them in stock rim.

    2) I can confirm BFG KO2 & Falken Wildpeak tires with size 285/70R17 on stock spare rim fits under TRD ORP with no KDSS and 4Runner Limited.

I mounted a 285/70-17 KO2 on the stock steel spare wheel. And yes it fits under the rear (original spare location).

Thank you Kmeeg, I appreciate your resonse.

The stock Dunlop tire is used as a spare, so I think I'll just stick with the OEM spare rim and have the 285 mounted for now since it's only for emergency use.

I have a 285/70/17 Falken M/T mounted on my factory spare wheel and it is sitting in its original location. In other words, tire fits on spare wheel, and they fit under the truck in the factory location no problem.

I also just did my lift(3/2) and went with the Baja Boss AT in 285 70 17. I have the TRD Pro Wheels and the spare fits fine.

Does anyone know the width of the OEM spare wheel? Is it 7.5 inches?

@Roothog , @travelinscout , how are you liking the Mickeys? I am eyeing them up as a possible replacement to my Toyos, when they finally wear out.

I am loving them. They are pretty quiet on the road, and they were awesome on my last trail run. I came from the Toyo AT3,another great tire, and the Mickeys are just a little better in my opinion.

The Mickey's get good reviews. I was steered by my 4x4 shop towards the Mickey's and away from the KO2's. They handle wet roads easily, I have yet to trail ride them. Also they're a good looking tire, aggressive and pretty quiet.

I don't think 150 ish is that bad, because then it will allow you to do a five tire rotation and your tires will last longer, but yeah there's no problem running the spare on a OEM steel wheel. TRD Pro wheels are the same size, and people run 285s on them all the time with no issue.

When I upsize tires, that's probably what I'll do.

I can confirm that a 285/70/17 will fit in the spare location. I have that size mounted on a TRD Pro wheel mounted as a spare.

The steel spare on the Offroad and I guess the pro are 7.5”. I bought an extra one from the dealer for a little over $100

This is a very good thread because I thought it was not possible to put a 285/70/17 spare underneath. Somewhere in the forum somebody said it could interfere with the hitch, but after reading all of these answers it seems it can be done. Anyone having any issues with the 285 underneath? Thank you all!

If it helps any, I believe some have even squeezed a 295 underneath. :D

I just took off my 295 mud tires for the winter and put on my 285 all-terrains. No problem fitting the 285 Toyo AT3 underneath.

I am sold then...if the badassguy...says it...then we are good! I thought I was going to have to buy a swing thing and spend even more $$ on this pit.

I mean, you can still buy a swingout. ;)

But, I think a bunch of folks are keeping 285's underneath. They're not physically much bigger than stock. But, they look proper on the 4Runner. And, your speedometer will be accurate!

Thank you for all the real world input your positive responses. I found a new take off ORP wheel for $130 shipped on the large auction site. This will allow me to use a 5 tire rotation and have peace of mind in case of an untimely flat. This forum rocks. I thought I was going to have buy a costly rear hitch swing out tire mount, although I love the look.

Old thread, but I'm doing this now - upgrading spare 265 to a 285 still using stock spare rim.
One thread I found said Trail Editions have 7.5" wheels but like all Runners have SR5 7" spare wheel?
Anybody able to confirm 2016 Trail stock spare wheel width?
    Thank-you!

Does anyone know if Toyota sells 7.5" wide steelies in 4runner spec? Something like as suggested above, a spare from specific trim, from fj, from (tundra?)

    I haven't measured mine, but I will . . . it must be 7"

285/70/17 fits just fine on the factory steel spare.

I know this I did it, the question was what is the width of the steel rim dude (7" or 7.5")
