When the dog goes for a ride with us the back window is down. Never noticed a problem. The two back door windows are down as well along with the fronts at least partially open.
Years ago we had a 96 Bronco and drove it with the back window down for the dogs regularly without a problem.

It's literally every other SUV rear hatch, with the additional feature of a roll-down rear window. I don't see how adding a feature can make it bad. Leave the window alone, and you have every other SUV hatch out there. With no annoying exhaust entry.

I didn’t state that it’s bad because they added that feature, I stated that it’s sucks that it’s design with where the exhaust exit is naturally sucks in exhaust fumes…I love the back window feature, I don’t like how it sucks in fumes is all I stated…

Yes. Yes it is especially when I worked very hard and wanted it for so long and waited For it to arrive at dealer for a few months.

My fiend also has a 2016 and had to have the manifolds done this past spring, he had it covered under his extended warranty I think though. Yes the Cummins is a very good engine of that time and believe me I know all about the steering problems back then, that’s why I am happy the new 1500’s utilizes a rack and pinion. Seeing the death wobble on some new rams is absolutely crazy, makes the 4 runner shimmy look smooth as silk. The shimmy doesn’t shake interior panels haha. My supervisor has a 2008 f250 king ranch 6.4L, I watched that bring down his happiness and wallet very quick, 3 engines later it’s running alright for now. It’s a beautiful rust free Texas truck but damn those engines suck (he purchased @ 200,000 miles). I went with the classic because all I could order for the 5th gens were 2023’s which makes it mandatory to have E torque and auto start stop which I don’t want, I don’t even want the MDS system but it’s been out for quite some time.

Its one of my favorite features. Ain't nobody gonna die from having it open. Its a minor issue while accelerating. Still a great feature that no other brand has.

I had a local muffler reroute the exhaust end for about 65 dollars. All good now.

Our '99 has a side exhaust and in the 17 years we've been driving it, have never noticed exhaust smell getting sucked in. I do usually have the driver's window down at the same time though. In town, I often do the same with our new ORP. However, I drove it on the freeway once with the sunroof open and rear window down and was totally gassed out. Why the hell did Totota use a straight out the back tail pipe on the 5th Gens (sans the Pro)??

    @Tmiesowicz
I will bite and give you a few minutes of my life.

Ah, the beloved Ram 1500. Great design, inside and out. Much better infotainment system. Hands down among the best in the industry.
Comfy, good on gas for its size, actually better mpg than the 4Runner. True story.
However. It. is. a. Ram. After 3 years, it will fall apart faster than you can fix it.
I had 3 of them(2 Hemis), driving a 4Runner now, go ahead, ask me why.

And about the hemi, don't get fooled, I know this is an older thread, but here are 57 pages and 1122 posts of dead hemi engines with FCA (now Stellnatis) giving you back a 3rd party refurbed engine with 3 months warranty. After 7 months wait, cause all the new engines go into the new trucks, you already signed on the dotted line, you are now a nuisance, a peasant. It is a pleasant read seeing trucks 4-5 years old with 40k miles and dead engines.

    https://www.ramforumz.com/threads/ram-hemi-cam-lifter-failure-thread.188978/

Before you pull the trigger, google Hemi tick. And no, Royal Purple does not help. Google ram cylinder 5 misfire. Google ram camshaft lifter issues.
And remember, you will save a fortune by changing your manifold bolts at max 35.000 miles. After that, good luck, hours of work trying to get the broken bolts out of the block.
Right away get the Bilstein shocks. OEMs will leak early and the truck will lean. At delivery, measure on a flat surface the wheel well to the tire on the brand new truck, beware that the dealer will not do anything if not greater than 2" difference.
And yes, 16 spark plugs. What a joy to change on a sunny afternoon.
Also make sure you buy the cabin air filter kit on ebay and install it yourself, cause Ram wont get you one at all. Hint: use a hot knife to cut the opening or a box cutter brand new. After that, all good.
Buy a higher trim, the lower trims come with halogens, worse than the 4Runner.

I can go on for more and more issues, but your time is out and all these problems can be solved by closing the 4Runner back window back up.

Now you know why I drive a 4Runner. Do I miss the truck? Hell yea. Go look at the new Tundra, that V6 twin turbo is a beast and the power delivery is amazing. If you can splurge on the hybrid, that thing drives like a bat outta hell.

I know of the issues that may come with the hemi, but over the years I have plenty of friends and co workers with them and love them and never have any serious issues. I am not buying a whole new vehicle over a back window that takes in fumes, I am buying because I can’t drive a defective 4 runner for the amount of money I paid for it. Sadly I am one of those cases that can’t be fixed (bad shimmy) along with terrible paint. I would have tried the tundra if it wasn’t brand new, maybe in 2-3 years I will trade up to that but time will tell. Hemi can have issues, but let’s not forget that cabs are being lifted off of brand new TOYOTA tundras for turbo issues. Not a fan of a tiny 3.5 liter V6 getting its ass kicked to put out the power that it does but if it shows to be reliable over time that’s a good thing. I am at the point in life where I come to realize everything is made like shit pretty much.

So true, but why take another spoonful of shit, when there are other things on the table ?
I think that twin turbo is coming from the Lexus side, I would buy one if I needed a truck.
As for the V6 getting its ass kicked, meh, to each his own. In today's day and age, the saying "there is no replacement for displacement" is long gone. No longer the same alloys, manufacturing tolerances, etc. If Ford can sell them 3.5s and 2.7s and still rock after 300k miles, I think Toyota can make a decent engine. I think back in 2018 Ford sold only a V8 1 out of 4 F150s.
As for the little shimmy in the steering wheel, meh, let this be the problem of my 4Runner. I have stock size Falkens and while they are not the best highway tire, they do just fine.
4Runner resale value....mmmmm, cake. Ram 1500 resale value, yet another spoonful of shit.
I hope I am not jinxing you, LOL. Good luck to you Sir. You gonna need it.

Understood. Remember that you’re talking about physics. Any vehicle with an open rear window similar to the 4Runner’s will draw in air and exhaust and dust. Old station wagons did it. It’s not how Toyota designed it, it’s simply physics. You might be able to put an extension on your exhaust pipe in an attempt to get the exhaust further out, but most of it will rejoin the slipstream at the back of the truck anyway.

My 4 runners value tanked $4500 in less than a year and by the way the paint is getting fucked up & one of the first things people notice while looking over the vehicle that doesn’t help, I can’t drive to work everyday pissed off because my steering wheel is shaking and live with that for years. If the tundra was out for atleast 2 years I probably would have gave it a go, the 4 runner is getting ditched before it tanks in value more, I am trying the regular hemi V8 before that’s canceled. If I recall you were here talking about selling your 4 runner just because of fuel prices and wanting to try a hybrid? I find that a funny reason to sell a PERFECT 4 runner as well lol. If fuel consumption was my only concern it would stay with me. BTW ford ecoboost engines are not known for being problem free either, neither are the new GM engines that are dead from the factory.

Not all 4Runners have the 55-65 shimmy. Maybe you could test drive another new model with a different paint color to find a good one.

I have been waiting for another to come in for a few months to test drive but they would need to allow a multiple day test drive to see if it happens or not, as this problem doesn’t occur 100% of the time, my parents have a 2019 that behaves just fine, the guy that sold that one to my parents @ Toyota sold himself a 2022 that has the shimmy and Toyota told him to go fuck him self it’s normal. I ask people in parking lots at this point if they have the shimmy and it’s almost a 50 / 50 split at the moment. It’s a large gamble.

Yea, they will probably cancel the V8s soon. Why not an older Tundra then ? A 2-3 years old Tundra will definitely outlast any domestic truck.
Oh, yes, I’m selling it as the gas prices (at least where I am) are stupid. (Much better now). Simple economics and we do a lot of highway, not a strong point for the 4Runner. 2 years in and I still can’t adjust to the wobbly highway drive.
Still waiting for my EV, nasty wait times across the board. Lucky I locked the price in back in march.
Paint is bad no matter which vehicle you get. Rams are not any better. You’ll get lots of orange peel, that’s for sure.

All the used tundras in my area are over priced & not in the best condition. I have looked over many in the lots around my town. I like the body style of the new ones 100% more vs the previous generation as well. If I went tundra I would wait for the kinks to be hopefully worked out of this new generation.

No, it won't. Air going by the side exhaust just picks it up, adds to the vortices going to the rear and is mixed into it just the same as rearward facing. Is it slightly less than rearward facing? Maybe, but not enough to notice. The reason for the side exhaust is to allow greater departure angles and not smashing the exhaust tip at the rear making it a "better" offroad vehicle.

Off topic but I like the side exhaust look a lot better. Driving around town with the engine up to temp I have noticed the ‘smell’ is pretty non existent

I'm guessing this is just a result of the market correcting itself. Last year, I could have sold my '19 with over 50K miles for more than I paid for it. Now, not so much.

Its not technically tanking in value. Its just correcting itself. Still one of the best value holding vehicles on the road.

I notice the exhaust smell on cold starts - not really that much worse than standing at a bus stop when the bus peels off.

are people worried about monoxide killing you? should not happen if you are ventilated and driving at speed.

if it's just the fumes, yeah I mean it's not great. Roll it down after about a minute of driving is my suggestion.

older 80s and some 90s cars would smells like this with just 1 front window down so I can't imagine it's that bad for you.

Another easy fix on the shimmy issue. Change the needle bearing for a bushing and you are good to go. All 4R, Tacoma and Tundra’s have this issue since the 90 but is truly an easy fix. I would never own a Dodge, all the people that I know had major nightmares with them and makes the 4R issue a walk in the park. My two cents.

Our friends just recently Lemon Lawed their Durango after months of dealing with electrical bugs. I really like the Durango R/T and the Explorer ST but.......Dodge, and Ford.

To the OP, I hope it works out for you. I know how it goes once you cross that frustration threshold, you can't get out of said vehicle soon enough. Keep us posted how it goes.
