Heres a quick review of my first impressions of the tune.

More responsive, the throttle response is improved, and it doesn't need extra throttle to go up a hill. Holds gears longer and shifts are smoother. You can definitely call it an improvement. Its hard to describe, it just runs better.

I'll report back with a mpg review.

    Its well worth it.

    Thanks for the feedback!
Glad you are liking the KDMax tune. Keep us updated. I am curious to see your MPG's. The 4Runners that we have tuned in the past have all gotten increased MPG's.

I'm trying to get this done but Adam (Denver) hasn't responded to the email yet. Adam also did my tune on my taco through the TW forums. Hoping to get in touch soon to make this happen and hoping he's on some epic vacation. lol

I'll report back once I do.

Its hard to put the improvements into words. Simply because it feels like a totally different 4r and I'm still running 87 octane. After reading tacomaworlds thread on kd max, im dying to try 93.

    Review mileage with 87 octane.

360 miles with the tune so far, just went though my 1st tank of gas. Average 17.8 mpg. My 4r does have 285s but no added weight. Also I've been heavy on the pedal.

City mileage didnt change much, But I did a 80 mile highway trip at 70-75mph I averaged 21mpg.

I had some odd shifting when the tune was first installed, turns out I just needed to floor it a couple times, pretty much after the tune the truck needs to relearn how you drive. Now shifting is perfect, it shifts quicker and smoother.

Throttle response is very sensitive( I love it). It stays in low rpms when cruising at 45mph, but it doesn't bog down. Going up hills is a breeze now, hell some hills the 4r doesn't even need to down shift anymore it just goes.

The next 2 tanks of gas im going to run 93 octane. From looking at the kdmax dyno charts on tacomaworld, 93 SHOULD be a good improvement in power over 87. So we will see.

I also ordered an injen intake.... now with the tune I'm starting to drive it harder :)

Wow running 93 octane is great. With 87 it didn't really feel like it gained power, but with 93 .Before getting up to 80mph was a challenge. Now it does it with ease... even hit 100mph(never could do that before).

    I'm loving this tune!

Met up with Alfie this morning with his 2015 4x4. Flashed him to KDMAX-Pro+XT after his test drive he immediately felt the power and response.
Thanks for meeting up with me this morning. Look forward to hearing how you are enjoying the Pro+XT.

Artie @blksubykid came by this afternoon with his 2013 4x 4Runner. This rig is a beast. Flashed to him the KDMAX-Pro+XT. After his test drive he was very happy. He felt the response and added power and the much smoother shifting. Artie will be heading out on a big trip and will post a review when he returns.
It was good meeting you Artie You did an excellent build job on your 4Runner.

I didn't get to drive it a ton yesterday. I really want to see the shift point change heading up I-70 where the 4R seems to struggle the most. I'll be doing that today.

I have been running a Pedal Commander on a fairly aggressive setting until the flash. I turned it off on the drive over to meet with Adam. I immediately remembered why I bought it in the first place. Lol

So, "first" first impressions. The throttle response is where it should be. It also feels like there's a good bump in torque off of the line. I feel more confident jumping into traffic and matching speed.

While testing in the mountains today, I hope to also refill on the high octane gas. I'm still running 87 right now. Hopefully I can report back on both the shift points and the huge octane changes tonight.

Do the installers just flash an off-the-shelf tune and send people on their way or is there also test run to confirm trims/AFR/etc and make minor adjustments if needed?

These are custom KDMAX tunes. If you have a specific need we can customize to fit your needs. The tunes have been tested on and offroad. Logging of trims/AFR/etc have been done. If you need a specific change we will make every effort to meet your requests.

    PapaRee,

I'm about 5 mi from your location.
Would like to see some dyno results for the 5th gen T4R's.
Maybe have a conversation about what I could expect real world from a tune.

Sounds good. In that case, throttle pedal sensitivity is what i wonder might need tweaked if i get a tune. Wife seems to lack finesse on her right foot. Thought she was gonna blow the motor or burn out the clutch blasting revs off the limiter on the last car i had a tune on (was a custom, not kdmax tune, on scion frs)

I can confirm that the throttle sensitivity can be changed. By default, you get the max setting (Or I did, anyway) and Adam offered to adjust it if I wanted.

    Second first impressions:

I never burned enough gas to get the higher octane gas into the tank but I did take it up into the mountains and I definitely have a sense of not having to fight so hard to keep my speed up on inclines especially at highway speeds (70-75mph), and this is in comparison to the 4Runner before the tune with the pedal commander on a fairly aggressive throttle setting. The pedal commander is still plugged in but I turned it off before the tune and it has stayed off. I will pull it out at some point when I have an afternoon freed up.

I feel that the shifting is smoother overall but have no idea if shift points moved or if it's just a change in logic. The one thing I can say is that my 4Runner had this nasty habit of not wanting to shift back into 5th gear after a long incline once the road started leveling back out. It no longer seems to have that issue. Thank goodness because it was the one thing I really hated about the shifting.

I'm not terribly far away from filling the tank back up with the good stuff but I work weekend so I'm hoping I can comment on the difference in gas/performance sometime later next week.

Nobody in that area. Closest is Michigan.
You can run 91 octane. The tune is Octane learning.
The DIY Remote tuning kit is an option. Contact Chris if you are interested.

    1000 miles review.

I'm blown away with how my 4runner is running now with the tune. I'm running 2857017 tires and you wouldn't even know it. It shift so smooth and quick. City fuel mileage didnt improve much, im at a solid 17.5mpg city. Highway fuel mileage did improve 20mpg.(im also heavy on the gas pedal)

But the torque increase at low rpms is GREAT.
I am running 93 octane but its worth it! And on the trails the power at low rpms is awesome.

If your running oversized tires or tow I highly recommend trying this tune out.

I have an issue with a UCA so I haven't been driving a lot. Still on the first tank of 91 octane. The UCA should be repaired on the 10th and I'll update after that. Sorry for the delay!
