285s on stock SR5?

Hey all, new to the group as my mom just passed down her stock 2014 SR5 to me. Always loved the look of the 17" TRD wheels, I was wondering if I could fit a TRD wheel with a 285 tire on the stock suspension. Thanks in advance

 

285 is only part of a tire size

Welcome. Below is a picture of my stock sr5p with 285 70 17s. They do fit, but it'll rub. Mine needed a body mount chop and trimming of the fender liner. I'm running a susp lift now

Hopefully you don't get offended easily lol I would highly recommend utilizing the search bar when it comes to asking questions about mods, tires, suspension, etc.

The question has probably already been asked (sometimes 100's of times) and some get a little annoyed.

To answer your question, depending on the tire 285/70/17 will most likely rub. I've heard a few people with Wildpeaks 285/70/17 say they didn't need to do a body mount chop and no rubbing. I have BF Goodrich KO2's and I needed a BMC.

 

I have 285 70 17 on the TRD wheels. I am also running a Bilstein lift setup. 6112/5160, with SPC UCA. Set on the highest clip. 2.7 inches up Front, 2 inches in the rear.

I did not have to do the BMC, but my front fender liner needed pushed forward, and my mud flaps resemble Swiss cheese, with a section cut out.

 

So easy answer, no, not without other intrusive modifications.
Next question: do I need new UCAs for xxxxx lift ? Yes, totally recommended.

This is my non professional personal opinion.

You can't fit 285s stock in 4runner without significant amount of work that is not worth. I would guess you would need a body mount chop, trimming lot of plastic, remove mud flap, using zip ties to push the fender liner plastic up, may be use an after market UCA to push the wheel forward.


Then my non professional opinion is when you lift the vehicle the upward travel of the tire is restricted so it does not need much work to clear things. Here's an example where this 4Runner SR5 got BFG KO2 285/70R17C with a spacer lift (3in front 2in back) and did not do any trimming. It rubbed a bit in front at full lock on a bump for few days but in few days the tire it self trimmed the plastic as needed. Still have the mud flaps.




Here's another example with OME lift with 2.5in front and 2in rear + SPC UCA with BFG KO2 285/70R17C where I trimmed just the front bumper lower part and pushed the fender liner to clear the tires. I still have mud flaps.



Here's another example of 4Runner with Ironman lift 2.5 front and 1.5rear with 285s where I only pushed the fender liner forward.



So a dumbo like me think 3-2.5 lift is the easiest way to fit 285s from no trimming to just minor trimming of plastic vs the more experienced people say lift don't clear 285s.

 

So essentially, they DIDN'T fit.

Well, they do. You can probably fit 295s or even 305s under there, given you only go straight. Forever.

 

They "fit". And you can drive it straight, but hard turns will rubs. Haha

I personally would rather trim and chop rather then lift just to clear.

 

285’s with no lift might look goofy.

 

I think the big tires no lift look is cool, but what's not so cool is only being able to drive in a straight line, haha.
