    Hello,
As a 1st time owner of a 4 runner I wanted to ask if the movement of the 4wd shifter normal when picking up speed?

It moves to the right then back to where it sits about 2/16 - 3/16 while picking up speed.

Grab that thing while driving and feel the vibration; it's pretty impressive actually. Harley-esque.

This movement is a physical indication that your lever is literally attached to your transfer case. Just like most many rear-drive stick shift cars have levers that move. The lever being part of the transfer case means that you are seeing how the TC it’s moving in it’s flexible mounts in relation to the frame and body.

It’s a beautiful thing to be able tot directly interact with the transfer case. In the age of virtual e-brakes, fake engine sounds piped through speakers, and computer controlled everything, the lever is a main attraction for me.

That boot around the lever is also deserving of some honor and recognition. It’s serving the role of a real boot…a cover that allows for movement.

I may be easily impressed, so not everybody will share my feelings for the lever lol

Yes. The shifter is attached to the transfer case.

Ironically, after you shift that mechanical link into 4WD gear, system uses electronic solenoid to activate 4WD.

I know, it’s tragic really. Maybe we can dream the 6th gen will come with manually operated hub disconnects. (Instead of the ADD)

If I'm not mistaken, the transfer case is shifted by the lever. It's the front differential that is engaged electronically.

Correct, the ADD is electric actuated. The old ADD on my 97’ used vacuum.

Nice thought, but the days of manual actuation on anything are most likely over.

In my obsession with manual hub locks, I ran into a youtube comment on an ADD repair video. The comment said somebody should make a manual cable actuator routed to the cab to slide the fork that connects the axle to the diff (to manually do what ADD does). Their’s aftermarket potential there!

Not a bad thought, but after 21 years and 260,000+ miles, my 4x4 system on my 97 Tacoma never failed me. I’m fairly confident that as long as I give my 18’ 4Runner the same care, it will out live me.

I’m nostalgic. I loved hopping out and locking the hubs. And it still blows my mind how reliable these “new” (lol) systems are.

2014 Neglected by the previous owners 2020 is an abused former rental... 2023 New I've been buying above my pay grade ☹️
My USB cable sometimes gets to barely touching the manual 4Hi/4Low shifter and the vibration is annoying. When I didn't know what it was, I was like "Oh-oh, what's wrong???"

Older GM 4x4s (S10, GMT400 fullsize) had a vacuum actuated front differential that was somewhat problematic as they got older, and probably 20+ years ago this exact product was released for them. I believe it was called the "Posi-Lock", or something to that effect.

Yeah, lol. Literally anything that touches that shifter vibrates, haha.

I used to have a square body Chevy pickup, the t-case lever would rock back and forth as I revved the engine (350).

Well if only ADD actuators would start failing more often, maybe that would pressure the aftermarket to finally make this for the 4runner ;)
