Post #135 was harsh indeed. I was surprised as well. Who cares what trim level he bought?
I am not a limited fan either, but the Nightshade edition is pretty sweet

Although it would be nice to have a 6th gear for better highway mileage, everyone would gripe twice as much about how it hunts between 4th-5th-*and* 6th going up the slightest incline.

I had a 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro with the Manual 6 speed it got Great Mpg it was a very capable Truck in almost everything from going deep off road camping handled excellent in the snow with no issues getting where I wanted to go. As much as I liked it I got rid of it..... it totally sucked at towing my boat up any real grade and that is important here because I live in the Mountains area, it was just as bad backing up the trailer or boat due to the gearing and I did a special modification that worked very well - it put the truck in 4 wheel drive without the front 4 x 4 engaged so you had extra low crawl for backing up but the worst part? No freaking balls to safely pass on the highway and that is very big issue since we have tons of trucks pulling double and triple trailers here. So got me a 2020 Trd Pro 4Runner and No going back!

Man I'm glad you posted this so I didn't have to. But I'll add that pumps are calibrated for accuracy at around 55-60 degrees. Any temp changes are very modest and extremely slow given that the fuel is underground and temps remain quite constant due to the excellent insulation properties of soil. But, it is still true.

Dallas traffic can be horrible in a few places. I find I don't have too many issues. :) (Corinth). Timing is everything. What a difference an hour makes.

16mpg in ours in town. Civic to a 4R? Thats like turning the volume from 3 to 12. No wonder you're shocked. LOL

I bought the 4runner because of what they did to the 3rd gen tacoma. My 2nd gen tacoma is still doing great with 200k miles on it. Gave that to my son. I will say that with the OV Tune for the 3rd gen tacoma available I would probably consider a 3rd gen now

I know a few guys who are OVtuned and much happier with them. It sounds like the automatic transmission shifting is significantly improved in addition to better power.

How is it that Toyota is the only car company that can somehow fuck up putting more power into an engine and more gears into a transmission?

I have a 08 200 series with a six speed that has over 150,000 miles on it.

CAFE standards for the fleet. They had to squeeze out as much mpg as they could? Just a guess.

That‘s my thought too, this vehicle could potentially last for the next 20 years. My dad still has his 03, and it runs like a dream. The cheap plastic parts are falling off the outside, but mechanically it‘s as sound as the day he bought it, haha. I‘ve decided I‘m going to pay this one off and keep it until it dies.

Simply put...these things are gas hogs! I knew that before I bought mine, because my '98 3rd gen sucks gas also.
I don't care though...they are 4Runners. That seems to be the trade off to own an incredible vehicle. Would I like to get better milage, Yes, but it is what it is.

In my experience, ppl should have an MPG rating just as a car does, they are all different. My 5.0 mustang logged an average of 13.7 MPG combined for the first 5,000 miles I drove it when I bought it new. I can tell you exactly why my mileage was so terrible. :)

Never go over 2,000 RPM, never go faster than 55pmh, and never start or stop. That is how you get the sticker MPG.

Absolutely. Driving habits consistently have had the most dramatic affect on fuel economy, in my experience.

The second biggest factor has been my roof rack. It's about 10% better without the basket.

Does it count if you just reply to a resurrected thread? I'm driving out of town this weekend, so I need all the help I can get. :D

It all depends on your driving habit and the temperature. If you keep flooring the gas pedal, you will get less mpg. If you have your AC on full during the hot summer months, your mpg is also affected.

I was shocked that the last time that I went out on a trail run with @Thatbassguy and @McSpazatron I "accidentally" hit 22.2mpg on the dinojuice meter. James said it was doable and I didn't believe him. On the pre-interstate portion of the trip home, I was averaging about 55-60mph. Low and behold, economy! So she does have a sweet spot!

    Nice!

Whenever I travel, I have to decide at some point whether I want to get there quickly, or save a few bucks on gas. This past winter, I went 65 to 70 the entire way down to Florida. But, any possible fuel savings were negated by the fact that I had my roof rack and a kayak strapped of the roof.

Last spring, after the Wyalusing trip, I had the roof rack off and got 19.9 on the 295 mud tires by going about 55 to 60 the whole way home.:turtleride:

I beat the living hell out of mine on the way home from work 9 miles the other day like a race car on the highway. I averaged 12. I thought that was pretty solid for how I treated the thing lol

Some people take the spare tire out to save on weight and MPG in which is pretty heavy to haul around. I tried it just for fun and on my 2018 Tacoma and it worked, surprisingly. I saw a change in MPG between 5 to 7 better. For those that may comment "if you have a flat your screwed" Well, I only commute from home to work and if something does happens I have AAA or people that can help bring me my spare tire, lol. Granted, I drove like this for two years and nothing happened.

5-7 mpg for removing a spare tire seems a little extreme…

Lol! I have driven around with several hundred pounds of constant extra weight, and it hardly affects my mileage. Taking out 60 or 70 lb is not going to affect the mileage in any measurable way, unless your spare tire had been on the roof before you removed it.

I would say that 0.5 miles per gallon for removing the spare would be extreme.

Noticing is probably extreme. The spare tire is ~1.5% of the curb weight before all the extra stuff gets added on. If that made a difference, you'd see a significant drop when you carry passengers. Now, if the spare was mounted on the roof, I can see where some change would be noticeable, but still probably not more than 10%. We took a long trip in Feb, loaded up with kids, junk, and with a Thule box on top and managed 17.5 on the highway. (I can push 20 on the highway, so this is about 12.5% reduction in fuel economy accounting for load and drag increases.

You don't buy a 4R for good mpq, driving/accelerating fast, or latest tech. It's not the best at everything but can do it. Everyone should know this before buying one.
