18 inch wheels??

anybody on here run 18’s on their rig?

$0.02, do not downgrade from 17in wheels to 18in for the 4Runner. Biggest tire with smallest wheel for its intended purpose.

If the 18in for Sienna? No problemo..

 

These are 18s with Nitto Ridge Grapplers 275/65R 18s.

 

i personally think 18’s are okay depending on what tire size you run. not everybody does hardcore off roading so 17’s are overkill in some cases wouldn’t you think?

 

do you by chance have a direct angle of the wheel/tire setup??

does the sidewall provide enough protection against curbs do you think? that is one of my main concerns Lol.

 

I’d think 18” would still give you enough sidewall. Problem is most 18” wheels are 9” wide which makes it harder to fit them on the 4Runner with out rubbing.

 

I have had these wheels installed for three years now, and have not had a problem with curbs. I have brushed a curb a couple of times while parking and no wheel damage.

 

Since I am not a "real off roader" I don't mind the 18 inch wheel. And you are correct about the rubbing - I did upgrade to adjustable UCAs to minimize rubbing. After some minor trimming and massaging the fender liner, I only have a very slight rub while backing up at nearly full lock on the steering.

 

I love 17s even for my non offroading Limited. One time when my Mrs turn 90 degree to a side road the rear tire went over the pavement at some speed. I see no damage to the wheel and see a big dirt mark on the tire (285/70R17). I'm happy that extra bit of cushion to save the wheel. So for me even at city driving happy to have the smallest wheel. Just shared my experience. Its OPs money to go for style over function.

 

Yeah there isn't alot of great 18" wheels. And look into the wheel weight. If your wheel weighs over 30lbs no matter how good it looks it is not an upgrade.

Fn wheels bfd(?) 18" is a great wheel, or lexus 460 wheels

 

I knew someone that routinely drove a Limited 4R on gravel/dirt roads. Had the stock 20s. Never aired down. Just drove it. Never had an issue.
I use to take the family Highlander out to fishing spots with the kids on some "roads" that were unpaved and not great shape. Front wheel drive with stock 19s and high performance summer street tires. Again, no airing down and no real issues.

18" wheels are fine even if you do "offroad". You'll just need be more mindful of terrain, speed, etc and maybe willing to accept a little scuffing if you go hard offroad.
Like others pointed out, main issue will be finding correct width and offset to not rub too bad on hard turns.

What I've found over the last few years is that there seems to be a lot more tire options for 17s so that might be something to consider. I had considered buying 17s for a truck that came stock with 18s not so long ago due to tire options.

 

Mine's on 265/65/18 tires on 18x9 0mm wheels.

These 18" wheels are about 2 pounds lighter than those 17" wheels I had before, so I'm still netting a weight reduction from my previous 17" setup, but definitely insane amount of weight saving from stock 20"

Yes, you do lose a bit of sidewall, and I drive pretty carefully not curbing the wheels as much as possible, I have not noticed any ride quality issue.

 

this, I'd go with 17" too, but I couldn't find any forged wheels at 17" that's 0mm offset.
My 17x8.5 -10mm wheels rub so much even after I trimmed the fender, probably because Limited has too much fender to trim

 

on stockish size 265/65/18, mine 9" wheel width no rubbing, but maybe rubbing if upsize the tire to 275

 

Do you have a pic of the trimming? Also another pic showing where it rubs?

For me I only cut the front of the fender liner and push it forward. I did not trim the bumper like I did for my TRD.

That is the spot mine rubbed when I was test fitting with my TRD spare tire. I pushed that liner and it was all good for me. Again we have different wheels, I got stock TRD Offroad wheels with 285/70R17. My video explains what I did. At the time of the video I had 2.5in front lift and 1.5 rear lift and now I have Ironman lift set to 2 1/4 front and 1.5 rear and still all good.

Was going to post asking about 18's, but found this thread first.

With an 18, you're only losing a half inch of sidewall, that's probably not a huge deal. I like the idea of the 18 because there are some interesting tire sizes. For example, I forget the metric size, but I do recall seeing a 32.5x10.0 for an 18-in wheel. Honestly, I think that's a perfect size for the 4Runner, and best part is that it is available in SL. I'm shopping tires and it seems a lot of the 17-in wheel choices in the size that I'm interested in are very heavy and or only available in LR E. For 99.95% pavement driving, I don't need an E.

If I could find an 18x7 or 7.5" wheel I would totally run those. Anybody know of one?

 

The wheel should be half the tire diameter, and large enough to clear the brakes. 32" tires would be great on a 16" wheel, but the 5th Gen brakes need a 17" wheel. No need for a larger wheel unless you intend to run 36" tires.

 

What's a 32.5x10.0 tire for a 17-in wheel? When most people run 32s, they run a 285, but I do not want an 11.5 in wide tire.

Looking at tire sizes, I noticed that there are a few tall/ narrow options for 18-in wheels that don't exist for 17s. I don't specifically want an 18-in wheel, I just want a taller narrow tire that's not E-rated. .

 

Fair point - 255/80 R17s all seem to be E rated.
