Misfire after long idle

    Lifted and fully rebuild motor
    I have a 97 4 runner 2.7 liter and runs fine down the road after idle for 10 or 15 mins it will go into fault mode and will shake. And show a cylinder 4 misfire any ideas as a lot of the parts are new not sure of a solution

    Swap coil packs and injectors and see if the misfire moves.

    Pull plugs and look for evidence of fouling.

    Buy and use a coolant exhaust test to check for blown head gasket.

    Don't replace parts until you know what is wrong. Suspect all non Toyota parts.

    Since I have gone through a similar issue with my 4Runner, albeit with a V6 engine, try the following suggestion as well.

    With the misfire present momentarily disconnect the #4 plug and see whether engine RPM changes or not. If you don't see a change in RPM, the issue has to be fuel starvation or lack of compression. Since the engine functions OK when cold, I'd think that compression must be OK and it is fuel related. Alternatively if you have access to an ignition tester, that will work as well. This narrows it down to either a bad injector or perhaps something with the ECM. Pull the injector and see whether its resistance across its terminals is within spec. If not, replace that injector. If resistance is OK, the injector may still be bad but you'll have to take it to a shop so that they can test its flow rate. Alternatively what others do is that they swap injectors to see whether the miss follows the injector or not.

    I disagree. A coil (or wire) that fails from becoming heat soaked will cause the same issue. Your test isn't a bad one, but it doesn't mean it MUST be fuel or compression.

    Edit: I forget the third gen uses a single coil for two plugs. So, yes, a good test to eliminate the coil. Can still be a wire issue though.
