    Also OP, worth mentioning because you said you don't want to regret having traded in a JL for this, you're dealing possibly with a uncommon issue (but still relevant) on the 4Runner. It, like any machine, has quirks. But keep in mind, you may find a way to get it to your liking, and that's where it really matters. Sometimes we overthink it and lose our enjoyment, sometimes we deal with it knowing that if this is as bad as it gets then we are thankful.

    All perspective. I'm not suggesting you deal with it, however...I'm just saying that if you wanted a more comfortable, more mechanically reliable Jeep, that is comfortable on road trips and still goes most places with a ton of aftermarket support, you're driving the right vehicle.

    I had a friend who had a 2020 Pro, had this wierd clunk, worked himself into a frenzy and ready to sell it just to be done with, fretted about Toyota build quality, etc., etc. for about a week. Brought it over to my house, tightened the tie rod castle nut. Back to perfect.

    I traded my 5th Jeep albeit a JK for my 4R. Even with this one quirk that I was able to almost eliminate in my 4R, I will never go back to a Jeep product. Death wobble for the Jeep happens probably at a higher rate than steering wheel shimmy for the 4R. The Jeep is more capable off road and has way better aftermarket support that is easier to install, but the 4R is better in almost every other way. I know this is annoying, but if you find the right Discount Tire I bet they can eliminate most of the balancing issues and then have a high quality alignment shop dial in your alignment.

    Thanks, main reasons I traded in the JL was because of comfort, at 50 years of age a 4 hour trip to SA just wasn’t cutting it. The other reason is reliability, I retire in 10 months and I wanted something more reliable, too many people are having trouble with the jeep JL eco-diesel and I do not want to be one of them.

    I’m also in my 50’s and I just love what the 4R is. I loved having Jeeps, but never had any interest in the JL. I think once you dial in this issue that you will be extremely happy and this vehicle could outlive both of us. I know the JL has zero chance of that.

    At the Toyota dealership, they gonna balance and rotate tires and alignment. I did not know oil changes are at 10k miles. Does that sound correct?

    One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    With less than 100 miles on the odo I was lucky at the dealer and got the service manager to drive it with myself and the wife in the car and he noticed it and made the service appt so now I have the issue on written record by HIM. They did road force balancing and the tech discovered one tire had the low-weight mark 180 degrees out. 95% of the shimmy is gone now.
    My theory is the tire balancing just helps the problem and is not the root issue and the culprit is something to do with the CVs geometry or possibly the sealed hubs? When it hits the ~60mph “sweet spot” frequency the vibration occurs but goes away at higher speeds. I wish a aftermarket manufacturer would make selectable hubs which I bet would eliminate it. Seems like the vast majority of folks have the shimmy between 60-65mph.

    I always thought the viberate was due to tire pressure, tire balancing and alignment... I had my tires road forced balance(at the dealer), which the tech are poorly trained, and need to finish everything as soon as possible. Then I pushed the tire pressure up to 35psi in the front tires. And it took most of the viberate away. But my viberate is 100% my tire, there is so much weight on them.

    But isn't every trd pro shipped over here with steelies and stock suspension. Then at port the trd pro parts installed. Most likely they are never realigned.

    Hey All,

    I'm going in for the 4th time for this same issue. Stock 22 SR5. I just bought/put on bronze trd rims 2 weeks ago and never had this issue until these new rims. What should I ask the dealership to do? I keep telling them from 60-70 the wheel shakes a little and they keep rebalancing them. They say it comes out to "perfect" balance everytime and are blaming the stock dunlop tires that are on them as the issue. I want to make sure that they get it right this time so I don't keep going back.

    Any suggestions for what I should say/ask?

    Yeah, I didn't know TRD Pro was partially made here in USA until I saw the Lunar rock video. Steel wheels, regular tires, no roof rack, no badges, no trd skid, looks like regular suspension,etc.. I also think those paint pen marks on TRD Pro is there because the suspension is installed in the USA? and this is why I think my TRD Pro had bad alignment and wheel balance. Mine even had a moonroof leak which was fixed by the dealer. It is sad people have to pay extra and get a lesser quality product.

    I could see it having something to do with the CV's, or the hubs. I wish someone could pin it down.

    It sure does suck that some folks are dealing with such a nuisance issue on new vehicles. Whether it's a budget car, or luxury car shouldn't matter. I would find it unacceptable regardless of the vehicle price.

    I must say that I've lost a little faith in Toyota over the last few years. Needle bearings, fuel pump recalls, shitty door lock actuators, rust problems, turbo problems (Tundra), valvetrain problems (Tacoma), etc. Maybe I'm just hearing about it more, because I'm on the forums. :notsure:

    I still think their quality is on par with anyone else, if not better. It just makes me wonder if they've slipped a little bit.

    I had the issue and ditched the dunlops and the issue is still here.

    Hopefully they don’t blame your issue on aftermarket wheels. Mine is still at the dealership, should be ready this afternoon. Will post outcome.
    If not fixed I’m going to keep taking it to dealership till it’s fixed, it’s under warranty. I think I read somewhere where someone kept taking it in for same reason and they installed a new set of tires and was fixed.

    Okay, after seeing the 100th shimmy post ima add my two cents. Now I don't know how bad of a shimmy it is, and have no idea if my 4Runner has it. But the word shimmy has me to believe its a minor shake of the wheel, if thats the case mine has it and its normal. Its a truck, so its going to drive like a truck. I grew up in old trucks and leaned to drive in them. From farm rusted pos trucks to 100k ultra luxurious trucks. They all drive the same. Is not a Mercedes S class, shimmy, rough rides, and noise is going to happen. Now if im wrong and its similar to an out of balance tires shake, im sorry, but from all the forum I read of this, it sounds like a minor issue thats normal for a truck.

    This ‘shimmy’ acts as if the tires balance and unbalance themselves at certain highway speeds whenever they please which makes the steering wheel shimmy in some cases (like mine) in a aggressive way. It’s NOT normal.

    current vehicles I drive that does not do this so it’s not because it’s a ‘truck based SUV’
    -2001 Tahoe @ 201,000 miles
    -2009 Silverado @ 66,000 miles
    -2016 f250 @ 16,000 miles
    -2018 f250 @ 59,000 miles
    And every other vehicle I have ever driven in my lifetime

    I had a 2015 Tacoma trd off road that did not do that. I don’t think it’s normal for any vehicle to do this at only certain speeds. Now if it did it all the time at all speeds, then that’s a different story.

    I can live with it, just that I wouldn’t expect it on a new vehicle. And if it’s under warranty, why not try to get it fixed.

    Thats fair, it just seemed after reading through a lot of these that some people were complaining of something very mild. But if its like what another has said feels like a tire imbalanced I can fully understand. But some make it to be like a slight vibration or movement.

    Bipolar tires. Honestly mine only gets wild if I came off a dirt trail and some has built up on the rims. Or it got really cold the night before and the tires are cold.

    Sorry, not buying it. I have a 18 yr old 7K# 2500 Cummins solid axle 4x4 that is legendary for steering shake and a 32 year old 4R and they don’t/never had steering shake like my brand new 4R had, kinda fixed now but I think it is just a temporary bandaid. Brand new off-the-lot +$50k vehicles should not have this.

    Yep. It's this in reality. Statistically, 1 Domestic does not equal 1 Toyota, even those built in the states. However, domestics are regularly and finally adapting to 5S, Lean Processes, and other manufacturing theories such as the Toyota Production Methods that have made Toyota successful, and as such, their quality has improved.

    Feel free to lose faith, but it's a result of bad news travels faster, and you're actively engaged. The average person is having a very good experience with Toyota, and to a lesser degree, domestics.

    In the end that's good for us all.

    One example, on IH8MUD, which is largely a Land Cruiser forum, they are all intrigued by someone's 3UR (the 5.7v8) that unexpectedly died at an incredibly low mileage, 140,000mi on the odometer. It's something when a 140k mi engine having a spring fail in the valve train makes news for being such a low mileage motor to die. Some people said they are losing faith in Land Cruisers, but 150,000 miles or 12 years is the average life expectancy for a normal vehicle, and Cruisers are considered to be built 2x as good. It's ONE engine, but on the forums you'd think it was a Toyota apocalypse.

    I get what you're saying.

    But, I have had more issues with this 4runner than my previous 2. And, I've never had the power locks fail on any Toyota before. I have no concerns about the engine or transmission, though. It's just the little things.

    Its just toyotas piss pour tire balancing procedures, and laziness on toyota dealers behalf...I recommend finding a offroad shop or a toyota(non dealer) shop near by, see if they have a road force balancer if so your set. Your toyota dealer mechanic doesn't care if its fixed. But the smaller shops seem to do a better job, mainly because they can't afford rework. The dealer probably just writes off rework to warranty claims.

    When I went to the dealer for road force balancing only, the service assistant came up and said "your tires punctured do you want us to patch it", I asked if its leaking air, they said they would check, came back and said "no its not do you still want us to patch it". Like what?

    If the service dept manager is crap the shop will be crap.

    I have a ‘21 TRD Pro. All stock wheels and tires. No shimmy. (Think a very very rapid back and forth vibration of steering wheel)

    I’ve had a ‘17 T4R with shimmy. No fix after many attempts.

    I have owned a variety of SUVs (Ford Bronco, Ram Charger/ Durango, Tahoe, Yukon Denali, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, etc., and pick up trucks, Ford F150, F250, Ford XLTRanger, Ram, etc.) No shimmy like my ‘17 SR5. Not even close.

    Just my 2 cents.

    I have noticed less shimmy with more tire pressure. 35psi in the front tires seem to get rid of the shimmy. Worth a try.

    I tried, it was a fail. Temperature are varying here this time of year so i fluctuate between 35-38 cold depending on the time and day
