System Malfunction

My pre collision, cruise control and ABS system malfunction warnings lit up today after driving 200 miles hwy miles on adaptive cruise. After another 120 miles with no cruise cuz it wouldnt work ,the truck died out and wouldnt restart. I couldnt shift out of park and when I pushed the button to start, NOTHING. Had it towed to the dealer but they cant look at it for a day or 2. Its a 2022 with 4K miles. Super bummed. The service writer thinks rodents may have chewed some wires. Said it's pretty common. Any ideas?

 

That is a bummer to hear. It could very well be chewed wires from a rodent, it is indeed very common. The only other thing I could think of is a dying battery (odd at 4k miles but it could happen).

At least it is under warranty. If it is a rodent issue, your comprehensive insurance coverage will cover it, which you'll be grateful for as Toyota (from what I understand) will not repair harnesses, they only replace them. I believe one guy had the main harness go bad and it was an astronomical price like $8k or something?!? I could be mistaken though.

 

The service dept called. Faulty brake sensor switch which in a keyless start vehicle causes all types of related issues. I guess the other warning lights are all in the same circuit as the brake sensor

In addition, if no meaningful error ODBII error codes are stored. Would a local mechanic have been able to diagnose the issues.. Just asking... Not insulting anyone

I remember my old Honda Pilot 2012. Once all the dash light comes on, the vehicle becomes immobile.

No meaningful error codes.

But two likely Issues
- Replace all piston rings
or Clean/Replace fouled fuel injectors

 

Glad they found the problem. Just shows how vulnerable modern vehicles are to electronic gremlins.

Yikes. Something else to look out for.

 

And you haven't had any suspension or tire work done?

I ask because sometimes people who replace suspension components stretch out the ABS line and the sensor fails.

 

Different part of the vehicle. If you think about all of the sensors that are on these things (hundreds) and then multiply that by how many are made each year, (2018 sensors alone it would top 14M) there are bound to be faulty ones. It sucks, but it is part of the Law of Probability.

 

this is the reason why for the first time ever I signed up for an extended warranty from toyota which covers all the electronics. And I'm normally the guy voiding every single part of warrantiable parts on his vehicles, definitely won't be doing that with the 4R.

 

I didn't have any work or modifications done. I guess it was just a bad sensor. If stuff like this continues to happen under warranty, I will get rid of it. I've owned many Toyota vehicles and always keep them stock and just drive them . First time I ever had to have one towed. I drove my 2004 for 250K miles, only issue I had was a bad antilock brake booster at 175k and multiple calipers

 

Sure makes me appreciate my "old" tech 2019....
