New 4Runner RPMs during break in?

Super excited about my new TRD off road that I picked up this weekend. I bought it with 8 miles on the odometer and it’s now at 150 miles. I’ve been babying it during the city driving I have been doing and was wondering if I could be causing issues by doing so. I’ve read other forum posts about the break in procedure in the owners manual but it doesn’t really say anything about limiting the RPM of the engine. I’ve also read about how it’s important that the piston rings seat properly. I’ve been trying to stay under 2k rpm with occasional revs up to 3k rpm. For those who bought their 4Runner new, did you try to stay under a certain RPM?

 

Don’t floor it for the first thousand miles. Don’t maintain a constant rpm for long periods of time. Other than that, drive it like you would normally drive.

 

On a related topic… according to the owners manual, try and avoid hard braking for the first 1000 miles

 

This one is tough when driving to work, thankfully only once every 2 weeks. Yesterday was a month since I’ve had it and I’m at 730 kms (453 miles), trying to drive it as much as possible to get past break in period so I can use cruise control and get an oil change.

 

one of the best practices is to break-in most of the components in the same time - put in 4LO and go on the highway, it will be really bad on gas, but it will engage all the system in the same time

 

Why on the hwy vs a slow, open road for a 5 mins or so?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I haven’t been beating on it and haven’t taken it over 3000 rpm’s when accelerating up to 50 mph so I don’t think that counts as sudden acceleration. Sounds like I’ll continue to keep driving it like I have been since I’ve been driving mostly how I normally would anyway. I will likely do an early oil change at 1000 miles.

 

Just vary the rpms, they're already broken in at the factory. I change my oil after the 1st 1k miles and every 5k miles after that

The manual says for the first 200 miles and that’s for the bedding on the brakes

●For the first 200 miles (300 km):Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 500 miles (800 km): Do not tow a trailer.
●For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

 

I had to drive 250 miles home from dealership and tried to vary speeds on mostly highway but was 60-70. No stomping it or high rpm’s. Hope it’s ok.

 

It will be fine as long as you varied the speed and didn't drone along at the same speed and rpm for extended periods. When you get old like me, you have to stop to pee every 20 minutes anyway, so following the break-in procedure is easy.

 

4LO on highway? WTF?

 

No. They are NOT broken in at the factory. That is completely wrong. Does anyone actually think that Toyota (or any mainstream manufacturer) is going to put every engine it builds through a break in? Not even remotely possible. Slap them together, install them and send them on their way!

Don't actually attempt it at home!

 

If you aren't burning oil after 1000 miles, you've done well with break-in.

If you are burning oil, consider it an upgrade to the BMW ownership experience.

 

I know it's a joke, but I don't think it's even possible. If it is, it would be terrifying!

On the Tacoma, the ECM prevents the automatic transmission from upshifting above 4th gear in 4Lo, so 70 mph is not possible at redline. I don't know if the 4Runner ECM does the same?

A few years ago there were pictures of a Jeep Rubicon (with the 4:1 transfer case) flat towed in 4Lo behind a motorhome. The engine did not last long at gas turbine speeds...

 

I think it's the same in the 4Runner. I thought I had tried bumping it into S5 once on a flat stretch of trail, but it didn't seem to shift into 5th.

I remember seeing a picture of that Jeep. I wonder how much that set the owner back.

Redditor calculated it, but then someone informed him of the gear lockout (which is new to me too!)

 

^My Tacoma revs to 7250 rpm with the KDMax tune (higher than a Lotus Emira), so I supposed I could try this...

And of course the manual transmission Tacoma has no gear limitation.

 

Years ago when someone said over 5mph with the locker in would cause a failure. surprise surprise I was being a dick. Also I probably recorded this with a typewriter so the quality sucks.
