Hi everyone. I'm new here. Have been lurking a while and decided to join as this seems like a great place for 4Runner owners.

I'm in northeast Ohio and currently waiting on delivery of a 2022 TRD Off Road Premium in Lunar Rock. I'll post pics when I get it.

    Welcome!

Are you considering rust proofing your new 4Runner? I also live in NE Ohio and have a 22 ORP. I used Cosmoline to coat the entire underside of my new 4Runner and am just curious as to what others in the area are doing.

I hadn't thought about that. I've lived here most of my life and have never done that to any other vehicle. Are you happy with the result so far?

Fluid Film. Shop I use wire wheels the scale then applies the treatment.

Welcome OP! Congrats on the purchase.

This is a very interesting topic and one that came up recently in my household. The NE is harsh on vehicles but choosing to undercoat is also expensive. This is the first I've heard of Cosmoline but it seams very similar to Fluid Film (which is a popular choice). The problem with these is reapplication (every year?) and they are messy when working under the vehicle. The other option is an undercoating like Por15 (or other product?) which dries and shouldn't be messy when crawling under the vehicle. Unfortunately, I think undercoating can get expensive. I'd love to hear other options or product as well.
Either way, these coatings would ideally be installed when the vehicle is new to inhibit corrosion from the start (OP has a good opportunity to research/decide before receiving the 4Runner). 5 years down the road with mine and I'm starting to see surface rust on the low hanging parts... but not sure if it's worth undercoating.

Thanks for the welcome! I don't live in Conneaut but my dad is originally from there and I still have some family there. I live closer to Cleveland.

Sorry for the delayed response. Fluid Film is a good product, but will wash off and needs to be applied annually to keep protecting your vehicle. The cosmoline is more like a durable waxy coating that looks like it might hold up for several years. I just bought a 12 pack of spray cans and coated the entire underside of my 4Runner (took about 6 cans for one application). Very happy with how it turned out and am pretty confident it will do a good job helping prevent my frame from being eaten by the winter road salt around here. If you plan to keep your car for a while, I think it’s a great idea to consider some type of undercoating. About $100 and a few hours to do it yourself.
