I've searched and chatted for weeks trying to determine the cause. Some say diff leaks, some say it burning in the cat. My trusted oil service team confirmed with me as well that's there's no leaks.
Any feedback much appreciated. The smell comes into the cabin even when vents off and closed.

My understanding is it’s the cat. Heats up, lots of chemical reactions going on. Mine does it too.

I not sure what the laws are now, but it is an emissions issue, and it may be covered well past manufacturers warrantees.

 

That's true, I believe British Columbia axed AirCare all together to acquire insurance. And I own my Runner outright no loan so ain't no thang

Does it go away? Is it only on hard acceleration? Engine not warmed up yet? Rear window down)? I am of the opinion that it's normal-ish. I have had four 5th gens since a 2014 model and every one stunk of sulfur when the engine was colder, hard acceleration, exacerbated by rear window down.

The Cat will make that smell when it gets ran hard or cheap gas used once in a while however If the catalytic converter, fuel filters, or fuel pressure sensors are worn out or damaged, a sulfur gas can leak out and make its way into your car's cabin so if you constantly get that rotten egg smell get it checked out.

 

Most every 4runner has this smell. Its only really noticeable when the rear windows down right?

People claim having the exhaust routed out the side(like a tacoma) rather then straight out the back, helps with this smell.

 

LOL indeed. I'm retarded and do a lot of horse swapping that really only costs me money. Used 14 TE, new 17 SR5, 2nd new 17 SR5 for my wife, then a used 19 ORP (current and a keeper). I made a meme or two to document my financial fuckery... and regret...

 

Check the exhaust for any damage & loose connections. I’d take it to a dealer & muffler shop for different bids if it is a cat problem. Make sure no one has tried to steal it & fucked with it. If they’re on backorder get in line asap

 

I dunno, I figured by the third thread you've made about this you would of figured it out.

 

Ya no just trying to put the issue to bed, I got two really young children it's my wife's daily at the moment man. Thanks tho, lotta ppl on combined forums have said it's the just a 4runner thing and increased by rear window down

 

My wild guess is that it could be one of the tires being chew out funny by the wheels upon acceleration. Our fuels are very low in sulfur (10 to 5ppm) and I doubt any of your catalytic converters are bad else you probably be seeing other things showing up on the exhaust. I would also check any gaskets and belts and see if there is any issues with them. Good luck.

Does anyone else smell it?

When I got original flavor COVID I lost smell, then after...some things smelled different. Coffee smelled like pee, butter smelled like rubber. 99% of things smelled right, however. I still don't know if they still smell like that or I "rewrote" it. Lots of COVID going round lately.

Also, for a few months after, I'd smell random cigarette smoke every day in my house. But I know no one was smoking, none of us do....very strange.

 

Sulfur smell is exhaust smell. If you smell it while driving it’s being swept in through some opening into the cabin, most likely the back hatch or hatch window. Check the hatch rubber gasket for leaks and make sure the hatch window is closed. If you have some kind of leak and exhaust is getting in you may notice it by smell under hard acceleration. But under light acceleration it’s still getting in with no smell. Carbon monoxide is odorless. If kids are seated in back they getting exposed whether there’s a smell or not.

From the 4Runner owner manual:
“Caution while driving
Keep the back door and back window closed while driving. If the back door or the back window is left open, the back door may hit nearby objects while driving or luggage may be unexpectedly thrown out, causing an accident. In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a serious health hazard. Make sure to close the back door and back window before driving.”

i agree about the cats. Sometimes it can have an amonia smell as well.

 

If the cats are clogged or damage wouldn't you notice a decrease in performance?

Have you had this smell from the purchase of your 4r? Or did it just start smelling?

I think you need to check your pants. That sulfur smell could come from there too. The 4R is probably ok. Sorry but it had to be done. .
