I are novice. Help me, Luigi! I searched but I suck at that too. OK, on a rotation how does the vehicle know which wheel is which? Do I have to do some sort of "control alt del" sorcery? Help me, mock me, but ultimately help me. Thanks, sorry, bye.

Are you talking about the Pressure sensors in the tires matching with the display? Holy cow, I never thought of this!!!

But that said, I think it must figure it out with some inbuilt sorcery, since my pressures have always corresponded to the correct corners, even after rotating. Unless I only ever checked when the rotation phase matched how they left the factory (I only rotate front to back).

Oops! Sorry, yes the tpms! Good stuff, thank you. I only had the tires rotated at the dealer and figured they did some sort of coding thing. I wanted to do it myself but couldn't find any info discussing how to make the monitors correlate with the correct wheel for 2020 - 2022 models.

I don't know if the newest 4R is the same but my Tundra somehow uses the signal strength of each TPMS to determine which one is where. So no update is needed.

Yes you can rotate and the 4Runner will learn the new locations. I believe it’s a proximity type sensor.

Interesting! I’ve never thought about it that way has to be some type of proximity sensor like @Spare Parts mentioned

The ones with direct read out of individual tires, such as the 2020+ 4Runner, you don't need to reprogram the location of the tires after tire rotation. The TPMS can calculate and figure out which wheel is at which corner. Imagine the car is moving and turning, the computer knows the steering angle, and each wheel's speed. At a given speed and given steering angle, each wheel's rotating speed is different and that difference can be used to infer which corner the wheel belongs to. And that's why usually you have to drive the vehicle for a bit in order to have the pressure reading to display, that's the time the computer needed to get enough data to calculate stuff.

Sorcery is sorcery…but, in this case it works out, ao no harm, no foul. :p

    GOOGLE SAYS:

Does Toyota use direct or indirect TPMS?

Indirect TPMS systems communicate tire pressure through the ABS system. In February 2006, Toyota switched to a direct TPMS system, where the tire pressure is communicated using TPMS sensors.

How does TPMS know which tire is which after rotation?

Indirect TPMS doesn't check air pressure and uses the anti lock brake system sensorsto determine which tire is spinning at a different speed. The assumption is that a tire that spins at a different speed than the other three tires has lost air pressure.

from what I can gather, direct TPMS uses serial numbers to know where each tire is.

so for my earlier guess that it was a proximity sensor, I now know better.

There are sensors with transmitters in each wheel. They look like this.
