So I sent an email to Magnuson after I saw their IG post over a month ago saying they were releasing their supercharger for newer 4R's (2018 or 2019+, whenever Toyota changed the mapping?). They said they'd post an update a week later and never did.

The CSR at Magnuson said they are shooting for an August release. I'm in CA, so she noted they have to get approval from CA (smog purposes I'd imagine), and are shooting for that to be done by end of the year.

I am 100% getting one. I love my 4R, it is one of my favorite cars of all time, but I am very spoiled by fast cars and the 4R certainly needs some extra boost. It won't be a rocket, but it will be fun, and oh that supercharge wine is reason enough alone....

Start running 91 so you have a tank of it when it's time.

I'll be getting it as well but I had a bad experience the first time with the TRD blower on my 2010 Tacoma. It was slower in the 1/4 by a lot than when I just had an intake and exhaust. Eventually it got alittle better and really woke up with a pulley change but power was never consistent. I think the TRD tune was to blame and I hope this tuning solution is better.

Interesting on the Tacoma. It actually might be better for neither of us to be the one of the first guinea pigs :)

    Good thinkin' on the 91

I’ve heard the supercharger whine is very quiet on Tacomas. Different engine, but good to know in order to manage expectations of how it will sound.

Sound is not the most important thing, but it doesn't mean that sound isn’t important ;).

The Magnuson Supercharger for the 2020+ 4Runner is now available to order through the Magnuson website. The price is $7,295. The increase in HP is 30% and the increase in torque is 28%.

I have a TRD Supercharger on my 2012 Tacoma and it is awesome. It has been flawless since the day it was installed.

I would love to pony up the $7,295 + installation costs but that is a helluva lot of money for a 30% increase. The old TRD Superchargers were rated at a 40% increase in HP. I worked for a Toyota dealer at the time I had the supercharger installed on my Tacoma so I paid employee pricing and including installation was just over $4K. That was a lot easier to justify than $8K.

I’ll have to think long and hard before I decide to spend that much for that little increase.

Yup, it is certainly a decent chunk of change. The 30% increase and supercharger wine is enough for me, but the $ aspect definitely warrants sleeping on it for quite a few nights. I think that Magnuson badge would look pretty sick on our 4R's rear end, though :)

30% is not huge, unless you've only got 270hp in a 5k lb truck. At only 25% hp increase, you've still got an engine with over 330hp. That's honestly pretty impressive for something you haven't opened up the engine for.

But yeah, easily $10k installed up here in Canuckistan. Still on the fence, but tempted beyond description

I was going to do it for sure...but now I have second thoughts. I do hate the fact that at 60 to 70mph, the 4R struggles trying to pass over and move a bit faster. But this new price along with the install would put us 10K. So unsure if we can justify this....I know there has to be a lot conversations at my kitchen table.

What kind of increase can we expect from the VF Tuning ECU software from Yotaworx?

I have been told that the gains are very minimal for the 4R. But again, I am not an expert in this tunning business.

Question here though.....has anyone here looked at the ProCharger unit? This is a bit different that the Magnesum...please share what you know.

That's more of a top end kit vs the Maggie but will make more peak power. It's a cool kit but it depends on what you want out of the power adder. Prochargers can also be noisy depending on how the gearing and bypass valve is setup.

Thanks for that. So the procharger ..claims they run colder and can make more power. So what's the deal with the magnum..unit? I don't know much about it so trying to make a decision. Thanks for sharing.

It's a positive displacement blower so it will make boost at basically any RPM but flow more as RPM rises. They aren't as efficient as a centrifugal blower (Procharger) so they heat the air more as air normally gets hotter when you compress it but there's a heat exchanger on both systems and the Maggie is not the old roots blowers of the early days.

Many thanks! If it was your unit, which one would you go for? The pro or the Maggie?

Maggie. These need more low end grunt vs high end power.

If I may chime in, I purchased a 2019 instead of a new one for the express purpose of being able to supercharge mine. Got it done right away - love it.

If you've got a 2020 or newer and are thinking about it, don't hesitate, it's well worth it.

Thanks for sharing. I ordered mine last month. So waiting now. Question, did you change the radiator? I see people upgrading this as well. Seems like unnecessary to me...but not sure.

I did not upgrade my radiator, and have had no problems whatsoever.

Not that you've asked, but once installed properly, it will feel like you'v got a smooth, solid, bullet-proof V8 in your truck - one that would have come from Toyota. Not some peaky, synthetically-hopped up engine. Smooth, natural power. You'll love it.

I'll have to go check to get you an exact figure. ...I believe that - all in (parts, installation, tax) - it came to around $9k.

Perfect. Thanks for the feedback. I am using one of the recommended shops that Magnesum has on their preferred partners. Seems like logical to me to stick with what they recommend. I was going to try and do it with a friend that has a shop as well but I don't trust myself with this stuff and rather leave to outfits that have done more often. Send us pictures if you can.
