I've those with just one complaint: these don't have slow down dampening when they open fully and just slam to the stop. Most of times I catch the door and keep it from slamming open but wish there was better brand/option out there.

You could reach out to GOBI. Mine open really slow and are nice, I’ve even got some large speakers in there hatch.

Before you spend a lot of money check out Mokidoorstep.com. It is much cheaper than a ladder and replacement struts and I have found it much more useful because I can move it from door to door depending on which part of the rack I need to access. It supports my 240 lb. bulk with no problems. $50 on the Moki website. Moki Door Step.jpg

That's pretty clever. I may need to get one. I don't know if it would help much for the rear batch but just for washing the car it would be useful. Thanks for the link.

Which brand did you go with and do you have a link for it? I am looking for a slow opening.

I am SOOO ordering the Moki. 5 foot 2. I don't even know what the roof looks like....

Just joshing. I am installing a ladder today as I will be driving from TX to VA and back next week, and usually 2-5 times a year, with totes strapped to top. I may need more access than ladder. And if I don't order that Moki I will for sure NEED to get up there during the trip. I can see the headlines now.... Short round old lady trying to get on top of her 4Runner with no assistance. The pics would be priceless.

I do the same, I try to hold on the strap while it is opening. My Husky cargo liner keeps the hatch from slamming. The lip of the cargo liner is far enough out to cushion the hatch from slamming closed.

Gobi makes good products, but getting it in a timely matter is another story. It took 10 months (promised 3 months) to get the ladder for my FJ. Maybe since the struts are not custom made and is in stock, you will get it shipped quickly.
