When I purchased my '19 4runner a year and a half ago I was told then that there was an existing recall on it (fuel pump). The dealer finally called me yesterday to schedule an appointment. After reading a few horror stories on this forum on installation screw-ups I decided to hold off for awhile till my confidence level was higher than what it currently is. I don't know if the service department is good or not, as I do my own work, but fact is I've had no issues with the vehicle and may just pass on the recall, at least for now.. Any thoughts on this?

I’d do it. Just due to the reliability and/or safety implications of that part. Hopefully they dont screw it up.

My dealership did the fuel pump recall and I haven’t had any problems. It’s been well over a year. For me it’s piece of mind.

My dealer did the fuel pump recall for me as well, over a year ago. No issues. For me, it was more about personal safety. The last thing I need was for the pump to quit on a very busy California freeway. If I recall correctly, @Thatbassguy had his pump fail while he was out and about.

We had that same Fuel pump recall/fix on our 2018 Highlander. No Issues since

From what I understand, the parts Toyota sends out for the recall do not include an o-ring. You may want to check with your dealership on that before you drop it off. The issue was that the old o-ring would then fail after it was reinstalled.

I had mine performed last summer. A few days later it began intermittently losing power on the freeway. On my way back from Illinois. I nursed it into a gas station, and once I shut it off it would not restart.

The dealership took care of it, but it was a hassle. They told me the issue was that an o-ring was installed improperly. My guess is that they reused the old one which caused the issue. I have not had any more issues since then, knock on wood.

No problems with my recall. You can deny it but then you can't hold them accountable for the failure.

Alright, y’all convinced me I’ll do it..

Just a little tip from one who spent many years earning a living in auto repair - should you get in a situation where you have no immediate choice but to use the old O-ring - stick it in a freezer for a couple of hours. The O-ring will contract to original size, then lube it up and set it in place and you’re good to go..

Hmmm, I have a 2019 and Carfax says there are no open recalls on the vehicle. I looked at the service records since it was new (delivered to original owner 12/10/2018) and none of them show a recall/replacement of the fuel pump. Was it just some 4R's with the problem or was it all of them?

I think you're making the right choice in letting them perform the recall fix. I know that with the luck I have the pump would go out at the absolute worst time possible lol

It was a certain date range for late 2018-2019 production if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks. I guess if my worry level gets too high I can stop by the local dealer and have them run the VIN and see what it says.

I think there was a place to check your VIN on Toyota's website, if you want to be sure.

Probably for the better with the luck of the dealership techs it’s like flipping a quarter. Did my whole front differential for the needle bearing would have never known it was done, added a oil change and they scratched the hell outta my grill…

Im not even concerned about the recall, (the fuel pump one) not in the least. Ill continue to put 4k plus a month on this thing, and not even worry.

FWIW, All work done on the fuel pump recall is done from under the car.
They do not need to cut a hole in your floor as some others stated (on the t4r website)!
Best to arrive with less than 1/4 tank and its done by the tech dropping the tank down.....

If the dealership cut a hole in my floor to replace a fuel pump I would have them replace my vehicle for the extensive damage. That’s completely unnecessary unless it’s a rusted up beater you don’t give a shit about…in my eyes at least.

Just stating that because it has happened at clueless dealerships and that’s not the correct/proper/technical procedure to replace the fuel pump.

Believe it I understand that’s not the proper way, I couldn’t believe someone could be that dumb to do that on a newer vehicle. My wife’s old POS escape actually had a access door under the rear seat to replace the pump I guess they planned those failures
