I would like to get a video camera to record footages of my long drives. Anyone can suggest a particular make/model? I have started reading about the Go Pro 10. Is this the right camera? Is there a better camera suited to film long drives?

Ive ran a vanture for 4 years. Upgraded in between that. A shit ton of storage, relap video (shit cans the old, and continues with new) Front and rear, speed/mph (if you you want it) gps, bump to start, parking mode, and, its on 24/7, for ever and ever (it has a shut off, if your battery/if it sees a voltage you put in) the entire 9yards. Blackvue, Garmin, many many others, makes nice stuff also. Your lucky, there are a billion makers of dash cams, that are now "cheap", at least 1080p, and work great. I wont have a vehicle, with out one. I have a go pro also, but, dont use it for vehicle needs. But, you could i suppose. Does your go pro auto on (bumps, accident, parking coverage, or the like, or, delete old tape and continue new?)

These Amazon action cameras are useless. Here's my waste of money. Trail video clips are useless as no stabilization even at 1080p. (edit - meaning everything is too shaky and not suitable to share as people will get headache watching). Dynamic range also poor where the darker areas less bright and sky is over exposed.

My advice don't buy these cheap ones. Buy a good gopro or those sony ones.

That could be true about some cameras - I haven’t yet had the opportunity to check mine (4Runner) out on the trail due to “life stuff”. However I’ve had excellent results using off-brand sport cams on my Yamaha Rhino side-by-side for last 8 years - and I do bounce around lot. I’d be happy to post some very high quality videos of recent trail rides using a $60 sport cam but this being a 4runner site I might get blindsided by bad juju from diehard crowd..:annoyed:

I recently purchased the vantrue S1 because it was on sale and had some decent reviews but haven’t had the time to install it yet. Hows the auto shut off for low battery voltage? I’ve read multiple reviews stating its not working properly for them.

Still on the fence if I’m gonna hard wire it or just use external battery for parking mode. By the way I tested it out with a cheap external battery from Amazon and parking mode lasted for 16 hours during which I activated the sensor twice per hour. The test is not really ideal coz it was done indoors but that’s what the result is for the $20 something battery pack. Battery didn’t heat up but camera unit was at a temp between 105 and 106 the whole time.

Has in-camera stabilization advanced to the point where a gimbal mount is unnecessary?

It’s not unusual for them to run warm/hot - at least in my experience..

Same here and I was more concerned about the external battery than the camera. Cam is supposed to operate up to 167 degrees per the manual. Just don’t know if the auto shut off feature really works for vantrue

I actually have this Rove dash cam. Ive had this for the last 2 years. I think this will do. I just downloaded the free version of DaVinci Resolve and have just started playing with it. I just thought a Go Pro will be better since I am more intereRove.jpg sted in filming long distance driving.

That appears to be a really nice little camera - a bit out of budget for me but very nice indeed.

Do you want a 24hr dash cam, or a cam you can mount, and then also take places.?

I wont own a rig with out a dash cam, recording 24/7 these days. Just me.

Here's a clip from a non-branded Chinese knock-off sport camera. Warning: Does NOT contain 4Runner content :annoyed:

Let me set this up (for entertainment value). My passenger is the wife of an ATV rider directly behind us who had just previously elected to ride in the side-by-side due to "comfort issues". The video starts out on approach to a very long hill climb which was new to all of us. About a third of the way up the hill was a bunch of debris intentionally, I suspect, put there to keep idiots (us) from ascending the hill - as we approach the debris you can here my passenger saying "no, no, NO WE CAN'T DO THIS!". Note that the moment we cleared the blockage she cracked up the rest of the way to the top....

Yes she is. Her husband has since sold there “near new” ATV and is now looking for a side-by-side. Evidently he wants to keep her all to himself - ahh, some guys….
