light bar above windshield help for dummies aka me

Hi. Novice me comes to you all once again, hat in hand. I would like to do a light bar. Is this one a good option, if not may I ask for a good alternative?

Is this a straight forward install? Any holes in body drilling? Anything else I need to know? Water draining issues with the line running down the water run off track? Any good theft deterrent measures?

Not a difficult install, but I’d sway you to not go that route. Top mounted light bars are trash for functionality. You’d be better off with a behind the grill light bar.

After going through several cheap light bars on previous vehicles, I suggest running a bead of RTV or silicone along all seams where moisture could get into the housing. The cheaper bars I have used have all had moisture issues that eventually ruin them.

 

Being completely inexperienced with light bars, I see at least two potential problems:

1 - I don't see any way that you'll avoid scuffing and scratching on your A-pillar. It may be drill-and-screw, in which case, no way.
2 - If you live in an area that gets snow/ice, that thing looks like it'll be a pain.

 

I did mine on my brush guard/bull bar. Works great. Had a rooftop mount on a Subaru (my first 4WD) and it didn't light up very well (shadows). Been 4-wheeling since the 60's, so I'm "Old School"!

 

Which KC lights did you go with? Thinking of putting some lights on my bar as well, but want something smaller and if possible DOT approved to use with my regular headlights or fog lights.

 

Actually, those are some "Hella's" I had on my FJ40. I replaced the hard plastic covers with the softer KC ones because the Hellas would snap loose.

 

Lights in the grill or in/on a bumper would serve you better, roof mounted bars are more trouble than their worth. Extreme LED is a fantastic option for a quality product at a fair price. Lifetime warranty to boot!

 

I bet that burns out within the year.

 

Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I won't go this route. Just wanted something that dumped a ton of light down the road. I saw someone had a nice custom, simple bar across where the Toyota emblem is to mount two big old lights. Sadly, he never made more and I don't see any other fitting options.

Appreciate the insight. I want/need lights badly up front but really don't like the behind the grill option. Argh. I am surprised there aren't more simple choices out there.

 

I'm late to the party but as an actual person with a roof mounted light bar, I'd advise against it. Unless you are ready to drop some serious coin on lights with optics that have essentially no spill, the lights are going to bounce off the hood and make using them uncomfortable.

I've run grill mounted lights before and they are just so much better. Certainly don't look as cool though...

 

Another vote for lights behind the grill. No drilling holes through external body parts causing rust. No wind noise. No glare off the hood. Great light output if you use quality lighting products. These are Diode Dynamics SS5's.
