To those who ride bicycles

I am thinking of getting this bike. Do I have to get one of those bike carriers, or will this fit in the trunk of our 4runner? I have a 2022 TRD sport. Oh, my wife maybe getting one as well.

 

A bike will fit easily if the seats are folded down.

Personally I prefer a hitch mounted carrier, but if I'm going to leave it unattended it fits in the back fine.

If you're talking about with the rear seats up, you'll most likely have to remove both wheels.

I keep a couple of black moving blankets in the back of mine for expensive stuff that I don't want to beat up like that. I do that before buying any kind of special bike racks

 

Yes, I believe so. You may just have to finagle them a certain way to make sure the pedals don't get caught in brake cables or wheel spokes, etc.

Like Yoytota said, moving blankets are handy for this.

It might also be possible to mount them upright with the front wheels off and a pair of fork mounts on a board.

 

Also probably depends on how much you're using it. If I was messing with it three or four times a week I'd probably go ahead and get some kind of rack to throw it on

 

Most likely, it will only be on weekends.

 

Two points to make here:
1. It depends on how you want to put the bike in the back (standing or laying on its side).
2. It also GREATLY depends on the size of the bike. (I have a 62cm bike and it is a very tight fit. Even moreso with my mountain bike).

I typically only use my rack on weekends, but I wouldn't want to give it up.

 

I will try and visit a store and hopefully, we can do a test fit. It looks like I the M size is the one for me. I have never owned a bike before. I used to ride motorcycles though. I had 2 BMWs, 2 Ducatis, and a Honda CBR1000RR before. Gave up motorcyles in 2014.

 

Welcome to the sport/hobby! I recommend standing them up with the front wheel off the bike (to clear the ceiling) if you don't want to get a bike rack just yet. I used a piece of wood and a fork mount to keep it in place. For 2 bikes, off set the fork mounts to give both handle bars clearance. Loading and removing the bikes will be a breeze but you might have to drop the seat to load:

 

I’ve put 2 road bikes in the back of my rig, back seats folded down and front tires taken off. Both bikes are in the medium category size. Don’t know how well bigger / taller bikes would fit. I do have a hitch mounted bike rack also for when I actually plan to drive somewhere farther to ride.

 

I have not been able to get my 2 Trek bikes into the rear without scraping on the headliner or the pedals and handlebars getting scrambled.

 

Even with furniture blankets, with 1 bike laying on another eventually you will end up with damage. Scratches. Bent derailleur…

 

You are going to want some sort of bike carrier, sooner or later. Picking one will open a whole new can of worms. You could easily spend more on a rack than the combined cost of 2 of those hybrids. My advice, talk with the bike shop. They have all the knowledge and if they are a good shop, they want to create another bike enthusiast who will come back for years and years. They may knock the rack down a little if you purchase all at once. There's a decent mark-up on accessories, not so much on bikes. Have fun and be safe!

 

Loading my 29" wheelset mountain bike the the back of the 4Runner while I waited for the 1UP to show up, was a royal pain. Doing two that way would really stink. I would get a Kuat, 1Up or QuickRStuff as soon as you can.

Definitely get a rack! With those bikes you can probably find a reasonably priced frame mounted rack. Loading one bike in the rear is a pain, two of them would be a royal pain in the ass. Internally you will have to take the front tires off, put a blanket between them, hope they don't get damaged, dirt on the inside, and little to no storage with the rear seats folded down to accommodate two bikes. The rear rack only takes a couple of minutes to install and remove. Less than a minute to mount each bike on the rack. I have the 1UP tray rack for my mountain bike, but overkill for your bikes.

 

I can get two fat bikes, front wheels off, or one bike (gravel, 29er, fat bike) in the back with the front wheel on. I use a 1UP rack most of the time though. Expensive, but the best rack hands-down. If you look at Discount Ramps online, they have lots of budget bike racks that will be just fine for the casual rider.

 

Get the bike rack, that's what the hitch is for. And put a cooler inside with lots of beer and water...and I guarantee you will enjoy your bike rides even more. Priorities is to stay hydrated...yes beer comes first.

 

I opted for the Bike rack. Toyota's plastic interior panels are soft and scratch easily. I don't like scratches.

You should see the gymnastics it takes to carry a tandem on a 4Runner. Getting it up on the roof is very precarious, fitting it inside is impossible and even with both wheels off, carrying it on a hanging rack means the dropouts are about the same width as the truck's mirrors.

 

I had a similar setup in my on jeep jku. Its nice since it keeps all the gear in the 4r

 

Ya, I just throw mine in the back. I’ve been riding the last couple days. And I tell you it is some great exercise. Almost got ran over by a Barcelona red 4R today.
I would of died happy.

 

For those of you laying your bikes in the back, keep the drive side up to keep weight off the derailleur and the hanger.The hanger can bend and cause shifting issues,you can bend it back easily but it weakens it every time you do.

if it's just me, I fold rear seats down and put mine inside, derailleur facing up. if I have someone riding with me, I'll use my carrier. I bought $150 dual carrier from Performance bike 10 years ago that's still going strong (even survived several trips zig zagging through Atlanta traffic)

Finally got a bike last Sunday. I bought a rack yesterday and decided to get the Swagman Chinook. I was looking at getting a 1Up but decided not to spend a rack that costs as much as the bike. If I have a $5,000 bike, I could have gotten a 1Up rack
