I’ve got a 1993 4Runner and the switch in the cab to move the rear window goes down but doesn’t bring the window back up, is it just a fried switch? Has anyone had experience/fixed and issue like this before? Cheers

On the third gen there is a lockout button on the door for all power windows including the rear. I think the rear may go down but not up if that button is on. Check that first.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
No button on the second gen.
Usually spilled coffee on the console is the culprit.

Does it go up and down with the key?

Actually, there is. It is on the drivers door arm rest.

It is either the switch or the relay box in the back of the vehicle. Switch is cheaper and easier to change. If the key starts having the same symptoms, then it is most definitely the relay box.

Not on the non power window/non-power locks/non power mirrors or non panything else on base 22re trim…..zero wires going to any of the doors. Only the tailgate has any wires to it…..
Sorry, I now realize my 4R is in the minority with zero options. You can pull all the doors off and not disconnect any wires.
No cruise control nor variable wipers either….2 speeds, high/low ….that’s all
I added the OEM AC kit and roof rack in 1990 when I bought it.

Well you did say that there was none on the 2nd Gen. when there is in fact one. Very few 4Runners came without power windows.

Yeah, I thought since I have a power back window I would’ve had a lock out switch as well.

Years ago(~15) my 18 yr old son and a bunch of his buddies were over to my house with their trucks and were talking about power windows. I mentioned the windows my truck can go up and down without the key in the ignition and they were amazed….until I showed them.

Off topic, this subject made me remember….my son’s loaded 1985 XtraCab. It had every single option available, I wish I had it today……beautiful truck…until he rolled it, twice. Every time I see this photo I get a little sick.

I just went and looked again. I have 2 lock out switches. One on the door handle and one on the center console right next to the rear window switch. I will assume the door one locks out the side windows and the center one locks out the rear window. Or both lock out all windows.

My 1993 Gen 2 4runner has a center console lockout button for the rear window. Next to it is the rear window up/down switch which started failing this week. Console switch does not work, but key in the rear door does work.

I would first check out the switch for the window and lock itself, it resides in a location perfect for coffee/drink spills. Use an ohm meter to verify function.
