What’s normal fuel economy on a newer 5th gen?

I felt so qualified to answer your question I just made an account.

    Owned a '20 GX460 and a '22 TRD Sport.

Obviously MPG is driver dependent; I drive pretty conservatively. Coasting when able, slow to average acceleration, and never getting above 75mph.

GX460 was difficult to average over 16mpg, but TRD Sport easily can average 19mpg with 50/50 mixed driving.

On the highway, my GX460 would be closer to 19mpg, but the TRD SPORT consistently can hit 23-24mpg if you leave it stock.

Little ‘city’ little highway 10 miles each way to work I usually average 17 and change. Took a trip from Independence OH to Buffalo NY going 80 mph the whole time with AC on and I think this is very acceptable per the 16 city / 19 highway mpg on window sticker. Towing my 4 wheeler on the 5x8 carry on trailer being heavy on the gas touching 70mph and varying speeds when off highway with AC on and 85* weather this is what I got from a full fill up (35 mile trip or so each way, one way loaded one not loaded)

Cool. I think you and I are some of the few people who had a new GX and swapped it for a 4R. Had a ‘21 Nebula Grey GX for a few months.

Between needing to run premium and the added weight, I spent more on gas with the GX and had to look at the grill every day.
    Cruel and unusual….

I actually loved the grill and headlights on the GX... seems like I am full of unpopular opinions.

The thing I actually hated about the GX was the cargo situation. We originally thought the barn door was quirky and fun but it was just a pain in the ass for accessibility. Add in the useless third row which takes away vertical trunk space by raising the load height, and the novelty of the fantastic materials, build quality, and smooth powerful ride and powertrain quickly ran out.

Happy to be back in the 4Runner

Went on a 2000 mile road trip in our 22 Limited 4Runner from KC to Hilton Head and drove 10-15 above the speed limit (except for Atlanta traffic) and averaged 19.2 mpg. Noticed on tanks that if I went slower I would get better and worse if I went faster but it only had 2K miles when we started so it should improve a little with more miles. Tires were pumped up to the maximum. Was very impressed with the 4Runner and glad we bought it!

My Dad told me years ago if you want to get good gas mileage try pretending there are raw eggs under your gas and brake pedal and you will get better fuel mileage if you do not break the eggs. The new 4Runner will be around 19 MPG

Are you saying my dip from 15.4 city in the summer to 13.5 in the winter is bad???

I'm to the point of wanting to put a 100 gallon fuel tank in the rear cargo area and buying fuel hedges for a year!

I don’t mind the little dip, my Tahoe goes from 12-13 in summer to 10 in the winter. I will accept the 15 or so I got in the cold.

2020 TRD Premium with approximately 29k miles. Around the town I’ve been getting 15-17. On the road I’ve gotten as high as 21.7 more than once. But I tend to stick to about 2 mph over the posted speed limit and use cruise control for most of my highway driving.

I was taking a chill roadtrip the other day, set the cruise at 60 I think, and reset the MPG meter. After an hour, I got 23.4 mpg. This was on flat terrain, load wasnt huge, but not empty (solo camping, basic tools). I have lift, stock tire size, warn bumper and I have clamp-on crossbars.

Hey, that’s not fair. The gold standard for a MPG claim is over a whole tank of gas. ;)

If you are at all weak in the knees when it comes to fuel prices (seems as though you are) then the 4Runner is the wrong vehicle for you. If you expect 20+ consistently then you need to be looking elsewhere.

This question is properly answered only over long periods. Anyone can see numbers well above or below the EPA estimate based on an hour or two of driving, or even a tank or two. It’s misleading.

Over 16k miles my computer reports an average of 17.2. My guess is 40% of my miles are highway miles.

Even driving gently and with no mods I’ve never ever seen more than maybe 23, and that only for short periods. Totally misleading.

I have several times gotten a hair above or below 20 on long trips. Not misleading.

My usual around town tank fill ups come to 13-15 mpg, calculated by hand at the pump.

These are realistic numbers for stock 4Rs IMO.

To put it another way, I believe the EPA city number is optimistic while the EPA highway number is pretty accurate, perhaps a hair pessimistic.

Ok so when I got the 4runner I was using premium unleaded (92) and I was averaging 15.8 but since fuel prices started up ticking I started using regular unleaded (87) Im now at 16.2. Go figure.

:laugh::laugh: :anonymous: Yah got me. Truth in advertising is closer to 12-14 mpg since I spent the rest of the day and next day on NF trails.

At least I didnt post the MPG after almost an hour of “drafting” a semi at the same speed (radar set to one bar). Oops I just did!

    upload_2022-6-30_9-36-9.jpg

If you are willing to travel at horse and buggy speeds, the 4runner just sips fuel. I dont know what everybody is complaining about.:p

I sold my 4R ORP I bought in February 2 weeks ago, because gas prices will not be coming back down any time soon, or ever. Unless the WH flips in '24. Average 17-19 with my 8-10 mile commute and regular daily driving between local and highway around Vegas. Weekly (or sometimes twice a week) fill ups of $100+ had me listing the vehicle on autotrader. My job(s) will have me on the road more in the near future, so it made sense to get rid of the 4R while I could get more than I paid for it on the used market. I average 22 mpg in my GT driving 'normally'. Once the mayhem of the car market cools down and I bank some extra money, I'll be on the hunt for some sort of hybrid or plug in hybrid for daily commutes, given how close we are to CA, I don't expect to pay under $5 a gal for a very long time.

To each his own, but to get rid of a car that gets 18 MPG just to switch to one that gets 22 MPG?

Yeah I would only do it for a hybrid that gets 40+mpg, but even then I'm not ready to say goodbye to the 4R. I don't drive enough to care yet and I won't give in to the hysteria.

Yeah while the mpg isn't ideal, particularly given our current pricing circumstances, when one does the math of buying something else against what is being spent on fuel - the payback on that will surprise you...

My daily commute is 2 hours and 200 miles at 5 days a week so i'm intimately in touch with the fuel consumption...
my latest numbers attached as pics.
the 1:01 drive was my drive in this morning and the since reset @23.5MPG is 61 hours and 24 minutes run time
huge advantage for me is my 70mph highway jaunt is only 2 miles long, the rest is either two lane 60mph highway or city driving 35mph

Just back from 3000 mostly highway trip from NH to Alabama and back. 2018 Limited. Stock tires. Roofbox. Averaged 20-21 mpg (Shell 87) at 65-70mph using cruise control when possible. The overall poor and distracted drivers weaving in and out make it difficult to just mind your own business and cruise. Between the up your rear tailgators and aggressive 18 wheelers it wasnt easy to just be cruising in the #2 lane. Had to go off cruise and do 75-80 to get a comfortable distance away from the Took the Blue Ridge parkway for a hundred miles or so and got 22mpg at 50mph.

4Runner was an added third vehicle to the stable. I didn't sell the 4R for a GT lol. Mustang is a toy that I used to regularly drive prior to the 4R purchase. Camaro is a classic. Gas prices and pay changes at my day job pushed me to daily the Mustang again until I can hunt down something with 30+ mpg for commutes etc.
