  1. True Crawl Gear 95:1 1st gear 4low with no crawl control

  2. Crawl control with 39:1 overall ratio in 1st gear 4 low

    Enough with the crawl control nonsense. Give me the true granny gear. I basically want to be able to pull stumps idling in first gear lol

    Haha. Remember before you got your 4Runner you watched a hundred videos on YouTube that demonstrated how capable the 4Runner is? And then you got one? Don’t get hung up on the numbers. :)

    these numbers arent meant to be a bad thing they mean that your Toyota drivetrain should last way longer than the others by reducing stress and strain on all of the pieces and parts in between the engine and the wheels

    I'd like to see a better balance in between gearing and longevity in Toyota trucks and SUVs but most folks that put longevity up at the top of the list right off

    I do agree, to an extent. I think the granny gears are part of Toyota's way of getting reasonable gas mileage. But, I'd rather have a transmission with more gears, and 4:10's.

    I also wish 4lo had more gear reduction. Maybe the next generation will have a super low first gear.

    As far as Crawl control; I would gladly trade that for a front locker. :)

    Notice how the higher ratio options have more gears? The Runner could use another gear or 2 but it's fine as is.

    Toyota isn't making their gearing ratios any higher on the new gens. Based on what we've seen in the new tundra and Sequoia anyways

    To get lower gear ratios, you have to either increase the driven gear (bigger diff's - reduced clearance) or shrink the driver (smaller pinions - less engaged teeth).

    Did you you mean "lower"? On the differential higher number = lower gearing.

    2003 V8 4x4 ARB Locked and Lifted on 35's with 4.88's
    My 1984 with manual and 5.29 gears calculates to be a 49.33 crawl ratio. It's kind of amazing that a new manual Bronco Sasquatch is nearly double that, BUT.... look at the Bronco's puny driveshafts and think again about calling the Toyota drivetrain weak. o_O:)

    Not sure why people look at the rear end #'s and consider it bad. I'm not engineer nor have I watched anything comparing it with the other trucks. But I'm sure there is a reason.

    I don't think Toyota had plans to make a serious "off roading" vehicle like we would wish.

    It just seems to be a typical thing to discuss. And, it's the only one we can really change down the road.

    Our 3.73's are fine at stock. But, add a bunch of weight and oversized tires, and many people end up regearing.

    I will eventually regear if I end up keeping this as long as I planned. Unfortunately, the most readily available regears are too aggressive for what I would want. But, if I end up with 35's, I'll be all about a 4.56 or 4.88.

    Most likely the smaller diameter section is solid while the larger diameter section is hollow. Diameter alone isn't much of a sign of weakness.

    I'm interested to see if Crawl control beats true crawl gear in the survey. Folks probably prefer a simulated crawl gear instead of an actual crawl gear

    Mall control just controls throttle and braking to move at a selected speed and uses traction control to put power where there's traction. There's no change in gearing besides simply being in low range.

    I'm wondering if Toyota said let's just leave the overall gear ratios lower in 4low to make the drivetrain last longer and then just add on electronic crawl control for the folks that want to rock crawl

    Personally I don’t consider our 5th gens as “rock crawlers”. I’ve been off roading Toyota’s for over 20 years and never had a problem, and that’s with no lockers, just basic 4wd.

    I see 3.830 for 1st and 2.566 for low. The 3.4 only made 183hp and 217tq. The 5th gen is 270/278.

    Folks on the Tacoma website we're saying that the lower gearing ratios are actually worse for the drivetrain and performance and that it's basically all for EPA purposes
