I just call it "my rig" but if I have to explain it to someone else then I refer to it as simply a 4Runner. It's kind of it's own type in my mind. :notsure:

That's fine. I don't care for some popular things myself. I happen to like a few John Hughes films, though.

I call it “MINE” as in “paid in full” - no payments!!

That’s the best kind of car, truck, station wagon, 4Runner or SUV that there is….

Lately I'm leaning toward calling it a 'car', because we have not been off the road in a while. Getting back on some old logging trails should suffice, add in some rocky up hills, and then we'll probably call it..... 'truck'. SUV sounds kind of generic to me, don't they call Jeep Cherokees SUV?

It's a truck. The Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Exploder, and Honda pilot to name a few modern-day SUVs are not in the same league as the 4Runner. The 4Runner shares more characteristics and parts from a truck. SUV to me is a family hauler that is built on fuel efficiency, and comfort in mind. Anything built for off-roading, towing, or hauling is a truck.

Well said! In my personal opinion a true truck also has a frame and a body attached. The 4Runner obviously has this (it should have been undercoated prior to production) but that’s another story.

The 84 Cherokee XJ is credited with being the first "modern" SUV.

According to the interwebs, the 74 Cherokee SJ was the first time the term "SUV' appeared, Jeep used it in it's marketing literature. Other SUVs of the time would include the K5 Blazer/Jimmy, Suburban, International Scout, Wagoneer, and the Bronco.

I wish we still had that type of SUV around.

And the Volkswagen Thing. Although the Thing pre-dates the term I think. The marketing literature calls it a “multi-purpose car.”

Although marketing term "SUV" didnt get coined until the 80s, my personal opinion is the Surfers in California were using the Woody's and panel wagons as an suv to haul surfboards and camping gear as far back as the late 40s and early 50s.

It was a CA. registered vehicle, so there’s that.
All of the Toyota P/U’s that I have had were titled, Commercial.
But, the Subaru Brat was a passenger car because it had the two rear facing seats in the bed.

ldk if this is still true (in CA.) but, if a seat(s) is permanently mounted in the bed of a P/U, it’s considered as a passenger (car), and has lower fees. But don’t get caught hauling anything nonhuman.
