Taking my time changing the oil, enjoying the weather, and putzin with the 4runner. I get to swapping in a new filter… Then a fly lands in my soup.

Last two times, I picked up oem filters at walmart. When I pulled out the used filter, I noticed it and the new one were different sizes. I don't think my mistake was picking the wrong box. But perhaps it was getting it at walmart.

How are you supposed to tell if you’re ever getting the right one when the filter isnt marked, and the OE boxes arent sealed?!?!

Anybody know which one is the correct size? For now Im just going to run my old filter.

Just my observation, the left filter is correct for 4Runner- right looks like Tundra filter which shouldn’t of let you screw the cap in the whole way. I have both and usually have a filter on hand for oil changes. I run Mobil 1 or Amsoil filters though.

Just to make sure my picture is clear, the used filter is pulled out of the housing so that the bottom of it is level with the new filter. I had no problem screwing that old filter all the way in. I was able to get the plastic housing to seat on the aluminum, and no leaks in 5000 miles.

do you still think it might be the tundra filter?

Well dammit, I still have my window from my previous search for the part number on toyotaparts.com.

Get this, I searched: oil filter for 2021 4runner, and the first hit was the filter I bought. Top of the page says I searched 21 4runner, but then it says does not fit.

So, thanks search engine… Ive always wanted to know right off the bat which filter doesnt fit when Im looking for a specific filter .

for the record, this is the right part (my lack of search ninja skills welcome any corrections or confirmations)

Thanks all, appreciate the confirmations. Keeping the old one in for now. This will be burned in my memory, or at least I’ll find this thread next time lol

My search engine returned the same results, but when you click on it it says it doesn't fit the 4Runner. Weird.

Your filter that ends in A1 is for the Tacoma with 3.5L and the A5 is the correct one for the 4R as mentioned above.

Not only the miles, but how long has the filter been installed. I literally changed the the oil on the wifes RAV4 this morning. Only been 3343 miles since last change, but it was exactly 1 year ago. My '96 Z71 Silverado with 272,000 gets driven maybe 2000 miles a year now. Oil in that gets changed every spring. I cannot confirm (though I haven't really looked) but have heard of the pleats in the filter breaking down/deteriorating over time. I feel, right or wrong, that a year is as long as I am willing to go between oil changes.

If you want a "buy once-cry once" filter, I found this.

    Uh, no.
Buy once, cry as often as before because you have to remove and clean that filter at every oil change. That’s worse than just throwing the filter element away. Auto parts stores take them along with your used oil for recycling anyway.

    From the website:
“Inspect and clean the filter at your manufacturer’s suggested oil change intervals. If your filter shows several pieces of
debris, clean, reinstall and inspect again at 1,000 miles. Remember, just because it appears clean, it may still need cleaning because the two layers of filter media trap particles that are too small for the human eye to see without magnification.
IMPORTANT NOTE: CLEAN AND FLUSH THE FILTER ELEMENT AT LEAST 3 or 4 TIMES EACH YEAR!
A good reminder is to clean at the 4 Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.”

You may have a good reason to get your filters from Walmart but just for reference, in case it's useful to you, I got my filter from the dealership for $5.45. If you have a dealership close by, it might be worth going that route for an OEM filter to avoid the potential of getting an random filter from Walmart because somebody opened the box and swapped it with another one for some reason.

For the record, I don't particularly like purchasing parts from the dealership, but for $5.45 it seems to make sense in this case.

I’ve always bought my filters from the dealership. Takes the guesswork out of worrying about counterfeit parts.

The filter is less 3 months old, and I’ll put at least 5,000 on it before summer is done (nobody do the numbers on fuel costs for that, it would be cruel), so I should have this filter retired before 6months.

Regarding the link on the oil filter…thanks for the brain worm, bud.. I still have to buy an air compressor and a nice camping mattress. Not to mention “go juice” for the rig. I need to prioritize
    :spending:

WHAT HE SAID!!! Yeah! It’s a pesky thing to have to clean it so often. Aint nobody got time for that!
    :lalala:

Although…cleaning it would allow me to inventory the particulates it catches more efficiently. The magnets would even allow for sorting metals by size and type… All I can do with the regular filter is stretch out the media and do a total count of particulates….

Wait, that’s weird, I dont do any of those things
    :anonymous:

Yeah, it’s weird that dealers are cheaper than walmart (they are actually expensive at wally world). I try to buy from the dealer when I remember. I dont usually shop at walmart, but recently rediscovered they have the best prices on oil, and was surprised they had OE Toyota filters. And since I dont plan, I usually find myself without a filter when dealers are closed.

Getting better at planning is my future goal. That’s my plan anyway… I also want to improve on executing goals and be less indecisive. Although, I’m not completely sure on that.

One on the left fits a 2015 Camry LE. I just put one on my son's car Saturday. By the way, it was $7.54 at Walmart. They wanted $14.99 for it at O'Reilly. Closest dealer is 80 miles away.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
The Utube “Project Farm” did a evaluation of oil one year old w/+3000 miles on it from his Cummins and had it lab tested against the same new oil along with his own tests and it showed no change in lubrication, just color(diesel soot).

Edit- I had intended to write “local” dealer. I have never purchased from them and only had a few service visits about 15 years ago. But I occasionally use their parts department.

I had the opposite deal....doing my first oil change on the 4Runner(dealer did all the previous ones) the element I pulled out of the vehicle is the shorter one -appears to be the same height as for a Camry. the YZZA5 that I bought is taller. guessing dealer messed up and put the wrong one in, as the part number checks out for my vehicle

There's only a few different Toyota cartridge filters. If it looks right, it's right.

    Just FYI...

I went to a Walmart near me the other day to buy oil and a filter for my Tacoma, and to my surprise, they had a whole section of Toyota OEM filters. I'd never seen them in Walmart before, so maybe something new?
