Surprisingly sturdy, course not as strong as using the custom bracket people buy for the bottom screw. This was just step one, I plan to replace the bottom screw with a long 1/4-20 straight through the toggler and into the metal frame I ain't buying no bracket diy

I like the idea and was considering it myself based on the other threads but am curious about the airbag deployment, both in terms of compromising the effectiveness of the airbag and the trajectory of that trim panel when the airbag deploys. Did you do any research in that area or is it something you're not as worried about?

 

The grab handle mod with bracket described in the following thread has been studied and there is no interference with the airbag deployment. In fact, one poster with the mod reported an accident he had where the airbag did deploy properly. I made this mod to my 18 ORP and it’s solid.

 

Agreed. The T4.org article referenced above addresses the airbag concern. After mounting, the grab handle looks exactly the same as the passenger side in relation to the airbag. I also used the T4.org writeup, and the oem grab handle. The FJ handle looks different, and would bug me...

 

Yeah I agree with all of you.
For one if someone beat me to this idea I didn't claim to be first, I obvs read previous threads.
Also I did the research on the airbag and it checked out.
Secondly, people should know I bought the OEM matching handle same as right side and tried it first. It doesn't fit your hand, there's less clearance between handle and pillar because the right side pillar trim is specifically molded different than the left. From what I experienced you'd have to purchase the whole left pillar trim for it to be comfortable.
I went with the FJ handle that of course doesn't match but has way more room for your hand much more comfortable looks good

 

My 2015 Tacoma has the left hand A-Pillar grab handle. Every time I get in my Runner I reach for a grab handle that is not there...

If you bought a right hand handle, I could see where it wouldn't feel right on the left. (Please excuse the pun.)

Actually here's the thing, the FJ pillar handles are identical - left is same as right. 2010+ 4Runner OEM technically only has right side handle listed for sale, but if you flip it and put it on the left actually is identical.
*The problem with the finger space lies with the left side long pillar trim piece being flat instead of contoured like the right side.

That totally makes sense. My thought was: seeing if a left side pillar from a Tacoma such as mine would fit the 4Runner. My Tacoma (2015) interior is gray, and I believe my 4Runner A-pillar is gray also. Even if the part numbers are different because of coming from different models, I would like to believe the Toyota Engineers didn't reinvent the wheel when it comes to A-pillar trim.

 

Hi DJ. Thanks for that comparison photo. Can you tell whether the FJ grab handle and the 4Runner handle have the same bolt hole spacing?

No reply yet. It’s only been 3 days. I’ll let the weekend go by before I try again.

im not in a panic about it. My vehicle came with the Predator side steps, which are bad for off-roading but good for bad knees. But I have some RSG sliders coming in July and I want to have that grab handle installed before I say goodbye to the Predator steps.

 

What you show here is the FJ Grip Handle, (74603-35010-BO). It’s application was for the over-the-door grab handle, I don’t believe it was used for the A pillar grab handle. But in the 4Runner it would give you extra room for big hands. With the 4Runner one I have to use a fingers-only grip, I can’t grab it with my whole fist.

In fact, there’s a mod described in the other forum to replace the flimsy fold-up 4Runner overhead handles with the old style solid FJ grab handles.

 

I've considered doing that overhead handle mod in the rear of my 4R, but figured since I never get back there, why bother...

 

Haha! I know what you mean. I actually did the mod for front driver and passenger. But depending how tall you are, or how high you adjust the seat height, you can bump your head on it while turning to look over your left shoulder. So I removed the driver side one and installed a soft paracord handle.

You got it exactly right, took the words out of my mouth. I'm thinking paracord to replace the spring loaded handles, because classic Toyota headroom is tight in 4runner and at 6'0 I know I'd hit my head on the OEM FJ handle of I put it above window

Yep, you are correct. It’s a different setup from the 4R.

 

Yeah right it's kinda cool how the FJ headliner can fit a handle better. But prolly less headroom than 4Runner, I hear they're a tad small inside..I mean their little windshields have 3 wipers !
