Hi- the new Gobi rack is on & Im looking for cargo boxes. Not the Thule/yakima cross bar mount type, but storage boxes I can take off/on easily while camping. Roam boxes look awesome, but exspensive.
Anyone have leads on something similar?
Easy to secure & deal with elements.

PLANO boxes @ home depot. u can fit 3 across then use one of the cross bars to hold them against the back rail(locks them in place) 1 ratchet strap across the top and youre done. In the pic u can see the middle one popped up, but we had just finished a really rough 4lo section. They stay flush through 90% terrain. Also they have been pretty much dust free and rain proof(if you added weather foam into the lid they might be 100%).

It’s a roof bag(samsonite) that didn’t fair so well on that trip, I now have a Ironman 4x4 roof bag it’s much higher quality and close to same price. However, in hind sight it’d be cheaper and easier to deal with to just buy more planos.

I also have a gobi rack coming soon and already use those boxes for my camping cargo. They're cheap and pretty decent quality. Good to know they fit 3 across.

Is that the 43" Amber/white dual function LED bar from CaliRaised? Simple install to the gobi?

The more I think it out, the removeable Plano boxes make more sense. The fixed roam or Pelican boxes would have to be loaded and unloaded each trip and another box used to store the camping stuff in the garage when it is not being used. Once you get to your destination, you would be climbing up and down continuously retrieving and putting away stuff with the fixed boxes. With a few small padlocks and a cable the Plano box could be secured well enough for semi valuable items.

I like your ladder haul bag, it is probably more durable than a purpose designed tire/ladder storage bag.

Its a climbing haul bag, super durable(meant to be dragged up rock) and fits a 14g kitchen trash bag + I already owned it :)

Bought a couple more 68 quart Plano boxes over the weekend. Also got some weather-stripping for the groove in the lids. One package did two boxes. The lids are a little tight to latch, have to push down firmly on the lid, but they can probably go underwater now without leaking.

Nice, Looks like I need to buy a couple more cargo boxes. Just added the refrigerator/freezer last night and it ate up a lot of interior space.

Would these be good for a cross-country road trip? Or would you recommend something else for that?
(I also have a Gobi rack).

You can also use these. I grabbed 6 (3 across fit perfect). I took them up in the snow and it rained on the way back. Did about 400 miles total with them on the trip and no issues.

On the other site these were recommended for GOBI racks and so far I’m pretty happy.

Many with many more to go
For the Plano boxes, they come in three sizes - 108q, 68q and 54q. I have two 108q with hinged lids and a 54q non hinged. I did not seal mine and have roughly 30k+ miles on them mounted to my roof racks. They been in 108° Arizona dusty dirt roads and -14° frozen Montana snow covered passes. I've never seen a drop of water in them nor any dust accumulation. For the money, they are the best there is as long as they are not stuffed full changing the shape of the box and hwo the lid fits. The only downside compared to Zarges, Pelican, Alubox, etc is you can't stand on them or load uber heavy loads on top of them. Each end has perfect places to run tiedowns to keep them from sliding around. They are lightweight and I use two stacked as a table surface for cooking with a 2-burner, cutting board, etc.

They are completely waterproof and get easier to close as the weather stripping compresses a little.
