Having a bad day. Sorry for the bad focus but it was getting pretty dark when I found it.

 

This is cool, so I looked it up. It's a tomato hornworm with parasitic wasp eggs attached, so it's not long for this world. If you have tomato plants, the wasps are a good thing.

 

A very late response, I know, but here goes:

I don't normally root for wasps. In fact, there's many I try to kill on sight. The wasp that specializes in critters like the tomato hornworm gets a free pass in my book, though!

The darn “mud-daubers” clog up my coolant water exit on my outbound every year. They pack a dead spider in the mud capsule to feed the larvae.

 

Actually, the spider isn't dead, yet. Not till some time after the larvae hatch, and then eat enough of the spider to kill it. Until then, just paralyzed by the wasp's sting. I hope it can't feel pain. Imagine the horror of waiting helplessly in a sealed mud room, unable to move, for an egg to hatch and eat you? </SHUDDER>

Besides all that, they clog up the cold water outflow pipe. That's bad enough, but if you're not a fan of spiders, think of the terror they feel while waiting. That's gotta be some consolation for a clogged up cold water outflow.

Otherwise, yeah, they do cause some royal PITAs, don't they?

Be careful!
Those things are vicious! If you have ANY pets, keep them locked up inside, or the coyotes will kill and eat them. They draw dogs out to the rest of the pack, and then they all attack. Cats are just light snacks.

I don't know about where you live, but in a lot of places it's open season on those things. No limit. Just need a hunting license. I would spend a night or two waiting up with a good rifle. I know some places there's a bounty on them. Like $25 a head. Just have to bring in ears, something like that. Check your local regs.

They really are dangerous pests, and spreading to where they don't need to be. Kill every one you can.

I appreciate what you’re saying. They have their place. Around here the average coyote is 35 lbs. When my standard poodle (bigger) is out there I’m with her. If I lose a chicken every now and then to them or hawks, I’m ok with that. If I get some real livestock I will get a couple of donkeys. We need predators though. The deer around here are insane and could use more pressure.

 

I appreciate your compassion. I shoot every coyote I see.

Yes, they have their place(s), but frequently, much like deer, where they ARE isn't where they belong. Many city's suburbs have packs roaming around, eating anything they can get ahold of. Garbage to pets. They're quite destructive. Granted, we moved into their territory quite often, but even so.
I would much rather see cougar and wolves controlling the deer, along with reasonable hunting regulations. The coyotes are much like the feral hogs, though. Overpopulating, and invading places they really don't belong, and never had been before.

Sorry. Shutting up now...

Agreed for the most part. We live out in the country and have all the animals including the occasional bear and bobcat. In the eastern US, coyotes filled in the vacuum caused by the extermination all the red wolves in this part of the country. I would love to have red wolves and the rare mountain lion or few up in the Smokies. The other night, the 'yotes got a little brave while I was still out with my dog. Tripped the camera near the fence at the edge of my backyard... where the deer are in this picture from a couple of evenings ago. I called her in, put her inside, and then unloaded a volley of 9mm in their direction. I'm not opposed to taking one out if needed. Again, I like knowing we still have some predators around and I love to hear them when they do their yipping/howling down in the fields.

 

Turtle soup?I just noticed these out of my kitchen window.

 

Nothing really... just the "creeper" shed out back with the giant oak as a backdrop. Things are really greening up now. The oak branches you see in the foreground are part of the tree behind the shed.
