What's the cheapest scan tool that I can get for a 2020 4Runner and 2020 Highlander that shows live transmission temperature?

Should I go ahead and get something more expensive like the Xtool D7?

I'd love to know this too. Need to do a 60k trans drain & fill.

Was looking at the Innova 5410 ($180) & 5510 ($250). The 5410 says "live stream data", but then the 5510 specifically says "transmission temperature".

Has anybody compared the scan tool transmission fluid temperature to just taking the IR temp gun temperature of the exterior of the transmission fluid pan in a 5th gen? Do they read the same around the drain hole area?

I read a description where someone did a test and the lag time was pretty significant. So when the fluid was up to temp the external pan was 5F degrees lower or more. By the time the pan was at the optimal temp the fluid was over temp.

There are several phone apps that can get the transmission temps from a compatible OBD dongle.

I used the scangauge on my Tacoma but I haven't done a fluid swap on my Runner yet.

It looks like the ScanGauge is about $130 on Amazon and it looks like they have the x gauge codes for the 5th gen 4Runner transmission fluid temp

The Torque Pro app is a great alternative for, I believe, $5 or $10. Then buy an ELM327 off Amazon for $25-ish and you're all set. There are multiple threads on how to program Torque to read trans temp. That's about as cheap as you can get.

It'll let me grab the transmission pan temp sensor and the torque converter sensor. Think it was $10 for the dongle and $5 for the app.

Here are the PID settings if anybody needs it.

I shot the temp gun all around the drain plug on the fluid pan and it was always within one to two degrees of the oil pan sensor temp so you could just do it that way...

You know you can create new gauges and assign them? That way you would have ongoing trans temp.

How did you manage to get an ELM327 only 90 minutes after I posted?

I haven't had a chance to play around with it too much but I'm going to try to figure that out. I had an old ELM 327 from a while back for programming tow mirrors

I thought maybe you lived across the street from an Amazon distribution center lol.

Definitely look into setting up the page for gauges. You can set size, style, etc. You will have a choice of predetermined gauges (coolant temp, throttle position, etc) and you can create your own custom gauges.

Here's a good thread on how to setup trans temp step by step:
