We are currently trying to decide between a red or white TRD Off Road Premium. The dealer had a used blue one on the lot and it showed all sorts of scratches and swirl marks. Our blue Ram has several bushes when I pulled a couple neighbors out of the ditch and it doesn't have any scratches. I've read the white paint isn't so good because Toyota doesn't put a clear coat over it. Help! Need your assistance/experiences.

    Thanks

Be prepared to get a lot of "get this color" because that's what the poster bought, so there's a bit of bias.

Ultimately taking care of your paint properly will increase its longevity and appearance, more so than just picking a color and calling it good.

Avoiding dirty brushes, sticking to a cleaning schedule, using high quality soaps and tools, and clay bar and waxing will really go a long way.

I know that's the lame answer/opinion, so for the fun, get the red one.

I was a big fan of white. I had Rav4, Venza, 4Runner SR5 in white. After seeing Toyota extended warranty for white paint issues I gave up on buying white even Toyota. Atleast Toyota is accepting it. Vs some brands deny paint issues and have big FB groups sharing the pain.

Though I don't have red I absolutely love Red 4Runners with black heritage grill and black wheels. I think in Toyota site also they feature red 4Runner because they look good. Just my personal opinion.

Both red and white look great but like Kmeeg stated, white seems to have issues so red might be the way to go.

I like the red. Looks great in the sun after a waxing. I bought Nautical Blue, btw. It was a toss-up for me, because they both looked nice side-by-side at the dealership.

Since I have a Nautical Blue 2019, I am partial. Remember, a relatively low mileage means NOTHING on a 4Runner (mine had ~17K on it). That being said, is it bright red or that Tabasco/chili pepper red? If so, I go for the red.

I prefer cars in colors other than white, black, silver, gray, and red. If only for the sake of variety. That said, you should get the white. My aunt always warned that red cars were accident magnets. ;-P

I get the white one. To me the red has sort of a lipstick color when the light is certain way. Nothing looks better than a old white LC

Thank you for your responses. There are two dealerships that have an Off Road Premium coming in equipped essentially the same except the red one has the TRD skid plate on it. That dealership will not allow me to put money on it and reserve it as I live about 90 miles away and am out of the area allowed by their corporation. It left Japan on the 5th of April. The dealership with the white one is local to me and it left Japan on the 14th.

I have read of problems with the white paint peeling, Toyota denying it at first but subsequently giving affected owners a 14 year extended warranty. Has this problem been corrected with the later years? The latest year I have read of with this issue was a 2019.

I’ve got a white 2018 and was not aware of a 14 year extended warranty. I would love that. So far after 3.5 years, I have not experienced any paint issues, knock on wood.

I have never had good luck with paint. My blue 87’ Ford would shed big chunks of paint driving down the highway.

My red 97’ Tacoma started fading at about the three year mark.

After cruising these forums for several years, it seems to me that owners of the silver and gray 4Runners have the least complaints regarding the paint. I was fortunate at the time in 2018, the dealership had all the trims and colors on the lot. But I just couldn’t resist the Stormtrooper. :)

Between the OP's two posted choices, I think white would be better long term.

I bought my Nautical Blue used, so the paint was already swirled to oblivion. But I don't really care.

It sounds like the white one would be easier for you to secure since it’s local to you.
But I would go with the red if you can. Something different. I don’t see very many red ones but you will see a million white ones.

I have white by the way and could have had red but the dealer that had it didn’t want to negotiate so the white was a no brainer.

what paint issues are the white ones having ??

Red looks great but May fade more in sun if not maintained. I have also read lot of posts about bad white paint jobs on here.

I don't know about the fading in the sun part, mine is my daily driver, it is out in the sun all day long and still looks good. Guessing where I live get more sun than most ;)

I can't speak to the technical reasons for one color or the other, but I've been driving a white sr5 premium loaner for the last week, and literally every time I look at it I find myself a little annoyed thinking white is just the wrong color for a 4runner. Love the red.

Yes, Toyota Super White is a single stage paint. I have a 2021 TRD ORP in Super White... if you take care of the paint I think you would be fine. I would consider applying a ceramic graphene coating - like Adams Graphene Ceramic Coating™ Advanced.

    I vote red as well.

Before we bought our MGM I wanted to get a Barcelona red. They look nice and not as common on the road as white. Where I live there seem to be lots of white compared to any other color. Wife wasn’t totally on board with the red and when the gray popped up I knew it was what she wanted.
