My beloved 2022 4runner has been in the shop 4 days now to get the oem toyota dashcam installed. The tech downloaded the instructions from tis (I have no idea what I'm saying, just repeating).
a wire that was supposed to be there wasn't. they were told to use a different one which isn't working. The foreman is involved as well as supposedly the regional tech center is involved trying to sort out issue. Not feeling confident at this point.
I'd entertain the remote possibility some wiring was mistakenly not installed, but being the 4runner is made in the legendary factory, Tahara, Aichi, Japan, I'd say that's pretty remote.

    Anyone?

    Thanks
    Randy

Must order Wire Harness Kit (PK6A4-33HW1) to complete installation

Please check somewhere on the Toyota website. I tried to get it installed for my 2022 TRD Sports.
Was told it wasn't compatible. Its suppose to mount on same location as Technology package windshield camera.

The tech said they had never installed one before.

    So I bailed out.

Recommend bailing out if you can. I was forced to buy the Toyota OEM dashcame because the port distributor already installed it prior to shipping to dealer, it's 1080p and mediocre at best quality.

for the same price aftermarket you get way better dashcam.

Also I don't think Toyota actually put any effort in making this dashcam, the UI has Toyota logo but the UX feels like just another rebadged mass market dashcam

Honestly, I thought the harness kit was kind of like that (the "integrated" dashcams for other models have that simplified wiring), not some elaborate wiring that it turned out to be.

I think I'll give them one more day then just demand they remove it, not charge me for the labor, and give me a refund for the harness+dashcam.
Everyone is so invested in trying to get this work, and they are stressed out over it. Wouldn't do it over again of course, but to I'll give them another day.

Seemed like a good idea at the time. :) It's a dashcam. I'm not shooting a movie, so HD is okay. And it seems the integration has some pluses.

If the port distributor was able to install, I wonder why my dealer is having trouble even they are in touch with regional support? Just a hypothetical question.

Are you sure it wasn't installed at factory?

Try to talk to them that since they experimented on your car and took them days, just waive the cost of the install + parts. Remember, they don’t want you to know that they don’t know what are they doing.

Bail out. I would not let a dealer rotate my tires.

I ended up getting a 2022 with the dash cam installed from the port. Thing is annoying. Beeping all the time, of course it saves this for when you are backing up so you freak out thinking your about to hit something. If something happens you think you should record you can't even hit the button, because it's right under the rear view mirror. Video quality is garbage. It's a joke for the 400 bucks it cost. For ~200$ you can get a VIOFO 4k front and rear that is better in every way.

    Yup.
    Either my 4runner
    1) has missing wiring. Unlikely
    2) or toyota is dropping the ball on installation instructions. Unlikely but more likely
    3) or my dealer techs don't know what they are doing. Most likely

They can eliminate 1) by just looking at one their rental 2022 4runners.
For 2) and 3) they have pretty much run out of time.

Hopefully this thread will be a cautionary tale for others to save them the hassle.

No resolution from Toyota expert techs so I bailed. They won't be able to uninstall it all until monday so if by some miracle there is a resolution monday morning I'll reconsider, otherwise it'll all be uninstalled and get a full refund.

Seems you are still keen on having it working somehow... Despite the negative vibes and warning signs.
Be thankful if your headliners and electrical systems are not cross wired.
