I’ve got a 4” thick air mattress pad. Incredibly comfortable. Of course mine is backpackable. But something to consider for a bit more coin.

I thought about a sleeping pad. I have one I use in my little backpacking tent. I just wanted to try something that might be more like a real bed.

I admit Im getting a bit obsessed with this one, despite it’s price. Memory foam over inflatable pad. The inflatable part is supposed to be made of the material used for SUPs. So it’s still stable at lower pressures.

Not cheap, not super portable, not light. Pretty much made for vehicle camping. Which is pretty much perfect for my way of rolling, one roaming guy with one 4runner.

 

Those look nice, but they're pretty narrow. I think this folding mattress will be a good setup for me.

Eye watering price too. I think if I ever get it, Ill use it as a bed in the house as well lol.

The foldable one you have looks comfy and it looks like it will package pretty nicely due to its collected shape.

 

The older I've gotten, the harder I find it is to get comfortable outside my own bed. Do you have to put up with that 48 hour window every time you take it out of storage, or was that just due to the way it was packaged from the vendor?

 

I'll definitely consider this if I start using my little backpacking tent more. I bought the folding mattress because I wanted a wider area in the 4Runner.

Lol! Yeah, pretty steep, but probably worth it if you sleep on it a lot.


It's ~ 25" × 39" × 12" folded, so I can tuck it off to the side or rear to make room for my cooler and totes. So far, it seems that this will be exactly what I was looking for. I'll definitely update once I spend a night on it.

 

Just the one time, as it comes vacuum packed.

I camp so much that my tent and air mattress feels like home to me. Hopefully this version of the car camping setup can be as comfortable, or at least close.

 

i wouldn't get the megamat for backpacking. it weights almost 5 pounds! that is pretty much what my tent and sleeping bag weigh combined. plus the one i have is about the size of a 1 liter bottle when compressed. that one looks to be much larger, and more suited for regular car camping.

 

My current sleeping pad folds down and rolls up pretty compact as well. I don't use my backpacking tent for actual backpacking, though. The plan was to use it for kayak camping, but I still haven't tried it yet.

 

i hear ya. i've got a ton of gear i haven't even used yet... sometimes i get a bit too far ahead of myself with my gear purchases. lol

 

Looks awesome! I like how you made the plywood boxes under the front! I used 1x4s for mine because I got a pallet of them for free, but I had planned to do what you did until I got the free boards. I got the link for this stuff on here somewhere and I think it is great for the price, matches the Toyota carpet well enough. Also, I put down some 5/8” foam on top of the deck before putting on the carpet - bony hips don’t hit the wood through my pad anymore.

Haha! The nice thing is that I've had time to try everything out before actually heading out to camp on a island.

So far, I've learned that a 2 person backpacking tent is hardly a 1 person tent. And, if 2 people are in there, they better be dating.

It's too bad, because I really like this Kelty Circuit 2 person tent. I might get a "3" or "4" person version if I can find one.

 

I"m the same way. When its just me and a dog, I bring a 2P tent. When the GF comes along its always a 3P. I always size up on tents. I just don't like feeling like a packed sardine.

I bought a Big Agnes Copper Spur 3P tent about 4 years ago to replace a much older and heavier 3P tent. Still haven't used it yet.... grrr

 

I'm looking at the outdoor carpeting Menards sells. I've used it on speaker enclosures and it hold up pretty good.

I already ordered it! I have a pretty tough air mattress now but sometimes I travel with a cat and he eventually pops everything.
I love the guitar! Beautiful work. I started making cigar box ukuleles during the lockdown. I have them all over the place now! Time to sell a few so I can put gears in my truck! lol

 

Yep. It’s pretty safe to say that tents are really only big enough for about half of what they are rated for comfortably. There are a few companies out there that are actually sized realistically.

 

They must expect people to pack i like sardines. I think my Coleman instant tent is rated for like 10 people. I think 4 would be comfortable. It's really nice for just 2 people.

 

I got supplies to finish the platform. Sanding blocks, spray paint, carpet. I'm looking forward to actually finishing one of these things!

 

The new tent I got is like a portable cabin and it’ll probably only ever have 2 people in it tops lol

I don’t mind small tents until there’s inclement weather, then it’s super nice to have the extra space to be able to stand up and move around

 

Nice! It's great being able to stand up to change clothes, also.

I agree about the weather, too. My ex and I would sometimes bring the cooler in the tent and play cards on it when it was raining

 

Carpeting in progress.. The adhesive said 65° working temperature, so I bought everything in the basement. I sure do love Spring in Wisconsin!

I laid out the carpet bottom side up, glued the top of the platform, and laid the platform on the carpet. Then, I sat on the platform for 10 minutes to help the glue adhere to the carpet. I couldn't find anything else I thought would be heavy enough. I'm going to wrap it around the edges to discourage it from peeling up.



Paint and some finishing touches to come. I'm going to bolt the front section down where the cargo anchors attach. I still need to find a good way to hold the rear section down.

 

Coming along nicely. I’d like to do the same to the GX one day.

 

Carpet done! I threw it in the 4Runner to see how it looks. I can't wait to use it!

Turnbuckles!!! Natures greatest invention! Always looking for an excuse to use them, sadly haven’t needed to yet.

 

Use "L" brackets, and bolt those to rear cargo anchor points. You could probably still use the D rings, too.
