What is the matter with moonroof? I know it is personal. But I actually like moonroof. I asked dealer a gray ORP with KDSS and moonroof. Everything else is optional. I was able to get it within 45 days with MSRP price. I have seen almost every ORP comes with moonroof. It is just easier that way.

I am with you yany007, I was driving my 2018 limited today and enjoying the moonroof open and the mid-day sun on my face as I drove through Valley Forge national park (Pennsylvania) on my lunch break. I am 6' 2" and I still think a moonroof is worth it. I was happy to have a moonroof included when I put my deposit down on a silver 2022 ORP w/ KDSS (hopefully being delivered in the next few weeks).

IMHO I agree, it all comes down to preference.

it is just neither my wife nor myself really enjoy them and I tend to keep vehicles like this a long time and from my observations after 10 or 15 years the moonroofs start becoming a maintenance liability and they do reduce head room a little. I understand completely why folks like them but for us(we are old) to pay $660 for a hole in the roof we really don’t want seems kinda silly. A solid roof never rattles, squeaks, leaks or stops working. I already know it reduces my allotment options but I am in no hurry to give away +50 grand for something kinda/sorta what we want. The Pro exhaust seemed annoying and the big roof rack is not my cup of tea either, they can be changed out but the moonroof can’t.

Yeah, just be patient. I got my ORP with no hole in the roof after a 5 month wait.

Agree, wait for what you want. It took me 3.5 months to get my LR ORP without a moonroof. Love it.

Well if we had any doubt of the approach used even by those salespeople who market themself as being out of the mud pit, there's the corporate marching orders sent down from the mountain.

Yea this discussion hits home personally, just having gone through the ordeal. And I got there as my 2006 4runner wouldn't pass state inspection due to severe frame rot at just 130K miles. So I was stuck without a legally driveable vehicle and unexpectedly in the new vehicle market at the absolute worst possible time. Most dealers around here don't give a hoot about helping a particular customer find what they want. 4runners are extremely scarce and whatever comes off the boat will be snapped up by somebody in a few days without any actual sales effort.

Called just every dealer I could find in New England without much luck as I was after that nautical blue. The closest was a dealer half way across the state who wanted a $1K non-refundable down payment for a vehicle still on a boat, which obviously I hadn't had a chance to driver or even touch. Despite their effort to rationalize that lunacy I drug my feet on it for a few days and somebody who I assume was satisfied by the website image did cough up that $1K. Oh and that dealer wanted only an additional $1K over MSRP for the privilege of being able to make a purchase.

Called some dealer down in PA where their management apparently had been sniffing far too much model airplane glue. Their "market adjustment" on 4runners was $4K over MSRP. "Uh huh.. <click>"

Finally found a dealer ~2h drive away who located 3 potential vehicles in the color and feature set I was after, and was proactive about trying to get them traded into their inventory, and sold at MSRP. I'm thinking wow, these guys are a pretty rare find.. wish they were closer to me as i wouldn't mind repeat business with them. Or so i thought until I drove there to pick it up and the sales guy was trying to cram a $8700 extended maintenance plan down my throat. Never mentioned it before and I wasn't pleased with the ambush tactic. Then he tells me Toyota requires an ASE certified mechanic to do all work on a vehicle or the warranty is void. I'm like, huh? So if I change the oil in my 4runner the warranty is void? "Yes that is correct, Toyota policy". I said I expect that would be illegal but I wasn't interested in taking on such a battle and he could keep the vehicle. So he goes through this charade of searching the warranty details on his iphone to then discover, "oh yea, it must have changed recently".

Anyway I didn't order custom but still ended up waiting about a 1.5 months for something to be found. I also placed a refundable deposit as a backup with another dealer who didn't manage to find a suitable vehicle and I now need to get that back. This has been a much crazier ordeal compared to the last 4runner I bought back in 2006 with a (then) new internet sales division of that dealer. Tell us what you want, found it while I waited, here's the price (which seemed so reasonable I for the first time had no inclination to haggle), then I decide how I'd like to pay. I picked it up a day or so later.

Props for getting exactly what you wanted.
Count me in on the no moonroof club on my Venture. While the ORP that didn’t last a week had one, I prioritized KDSS and was pretty lucky my dealer had mercy after my ORP got destroyed.
KDSS without moonroof really does seem quite rare in the ORP/Venture.
Owning to this one having no dealer add ons, the price was almost identical to my ORP which likewise was KDSS.

While I really was bummed not to have moonroof, much of that was due to living somewhere that is usually between the 50s and 60s year round. Now being over 700 miles South right on the coast, rarely here would I use it.

I started calling dealers Thursday and found my Army Green ORP w kdss on Friday. It is on a rail car and should be here in two weeks. I have had 4runners before and was hoping Toyota would make a Army Green in the Off road premium model. I found white and gray ones and even a lunar rock ORP w/o kdss and then on Friday boom. I can’t believe it and until it’s sitting in my garage I probably won’t.

Score. Had I gotten my 4R in ‘22, I would have gone for AG over MGM. Are you going to paint the valences? My Venture came that way and with both AG and MGM, it really pops. As I briefly had a ORP in the same color, made the difference far more noticeable.

I’ve seen some painted and/or wrapped in black! I like that. Not a fan of the silver. Long term, i want to put one of those inserts in there for winch to sit behind. Gray was my 2nd choice had the Army Green not popped up yesterday.

Six days for me. I went to a dealer on a Tuesday. Told the rep what I wanted. He looked into his computer and found the exact model I was looking for on the way to the dealer. The following Monday I got the call that the unit has arrived.

No rubber seals to dry out and leak or electrical stuff to die on something I will never use. I have seen the water damage to headliners/interior from leaks on older Toyotas which is a bit worse than a rattle or squeak. My son’s 4Runner moonroof is stuck closed which I guess is better than open.
My 32yr old 4R is tight as a drum, even now as it spends 50% of its time on trails and the solid roof doesn’t leak or malfunction.
There are only two things wrong with it right now after all these years; the 3rd speed on the fan switch sometimes randomly switches to the 2nd speed by itself and BOTH rear door (manual) locks slowly crab to the down/locked position every time the door handle is cycled which I’m pretty sure would just require pulling the door panels and cleaning/lubing the lock mechanism. Since I run a lot of trails in the high desert the culprit is likely from trail dust.

If I waited for no sunroof, I’d be in a different trim, or brand. I had to give up KDSS and NO moonroof, unless I wanted to travel many states, pay to have it transported, and over MSRP. So, I’m 2weeks in without KDSS and have been using the moon roof. Oh, I started my search back in November and got serious in February.

I’m in no hurry, I even told the salesman I’ll wait for a 2023 if necessary.
Who knows, there might be color options I might like better. I just want it, don’t need it and for +$50 grand I’m very fussy.

I’m in the GTA (west of Toronto). I ordered a black Off Road a month ago (Mar 24th) but have no idea on an ETA or if I’m getting one. Really hoping I’d have it before June. I see lots of new Jeep Wranglers for sale, too many more $$ over 4Runner, for something a little less reliable. C’mon Toyota Canada, get some in!

Dang I feel like I lucked out. Dealt with Toyota of Cedar Park as they were the closest to me but also a rare dealer that still dealt at MSRP with no markup adjustments. Put a refundable $1000 deposit on a new 22 off road premium (White, Barcelona Red, or Black) with Off-Road Upgrade package and they found an allocation 2 days later. They said expected ETA would be 2-3 weeks from that point. Then 2 weeks to do the day, they called saying it was delivered. Went and picked it up that afternoon. This is also w/no KDSS. Easiest deal I’ve ever had.

congrats, I know they got no markup, but did they force the $998 exterior ceramic coat, interior protection, window tint on yours?

Seems it boils down to varying personal preference, and this time it pushed me into an SR5 premium where otherwise I wouldn't have been squeezed an extra $3~4K on the purchase. Back when buying the 2006 I was after the (then) optional tow hitch/package. Dealer asked if there was anything else such as a sunroof we'd like, and the better half said "NO". Later finding the 2000 M/T 4runner with a sunroof I was all agog with the presence of a hole in the roof. Never before had it, didn't know how much I'd enjoy it, and deeply regretted passing it up on the 2006.

As someone who never got over Toyota's decision decades ago to abandon sales of any "Cab & Chassis" version of a truck in the US market, the 2006 4runner still was far closer to what I was after: 4WD, another wheel on the dash, 2" tow receiver at the end of a ladder frame, and that's about it. So the new 2022 4runner struck me as a Consumer Electronic Show exhibit on wheels. Being an embedded computer engineer I'm up to my eyeballs in this technology all waking hours, but I never expected it to land so pervasively in a modestly equipped 4runner.

At this point, it would seem whatever wait is worth it provided you get one considering what Pro’s and even ORP’s are being listed for on Autotrader.

I had not looked for for the past month or so, but last I looked Toyota dealers were not listing Pro’s for over $80,000 and even ORP’s for $72000:
Those came up on the first page from simply looking for 2021+ 4WD models.
    Blown away.

So my attempts are getting a 2022 have been pretty much met with resistance. The dealerships keep calling and telling me they have a SR5 Premium or TRD off-road premium, but the base models almost impossible to find. There was one in TRD OP base for 42k Oregon that sold immediately.

Also, at least one dealership, Livermore Toyota, who said they don’t charge markup are now charging $2000 markup on every TRD off-road.

    2022 Limited - Blizzard White
Running Boards, Cross Bars, Tonneau... otherwise pretty stock
Hello... Just joined the group and this thread caught my eye. Here's our experience. Went shopping for Wife's car last week and she had no idea what she wanted but was focused on small speedy stuff as her last was a high-performance VW GTI VR6 stick shift. We stopped in a local Toyota dealer on a whim to see what was in their "used" lot and we followed a car transport carrier onto their property. Long story short - she loved driving a 2022 Limited model that was available for a test drive and we bought the 2022 Limited - Blizzard White off the carrier still in its plastic shipping materials. Had to come back next day for them to prep and set up the computers and finish up paperwork. I put a tonneau cover and crossbars on it yesterday and waiting on the running boards. We opted for a Toyota underwritten 7/100 plan and will take it for wax undercoat once the boards are on. She absolutely loves it. I can't get over the 180 she took from the stuff I thought she wanted. I'm just learning about the vehicle and am impressed with every turn. Hate to say it, but the wife was right on the money with her instincts about a 4Runner. Sorry for the inconvenience and disappointments imposed on and experienced by so many in this thread. I'm embarrassed to say that our wait time was zero. Lucky, I guess. FYI... Once we bought this 4WD, I decided to sell our old small pick-up since we didn't need 2 4WD machines... ended up getting 30% more than I paid for it 12 years ago... geez. Would have felt guilty asking that much, but Toyota dealership knocked that remorse out of me... Couldn't even get them to throw in a minor accessory. The test drive unit my wife drove had been unloaded and prepped that day (a forest green color) and it sold next day before we got in.

I guess things are bit different in the States for pricing on new. Here there is a cap % over MSRP, so dealers prefer to sell used where they don’t have to answer to regulations or the brand. A lot of dealers here are calling people with cars less than a year old, asking them to trade them in as they make more money on low mileages used than new.
