I know the obvious differences in these two but wondering if anyone has driven these 2 off-road and has any feedback on how they compare off-road ( say driving fast over desert wash and whoops and dirt roads and washboards)? especially in regards to the suspension. Is one a more softer and less jarring than the other?

You’re not going to great performance from either on washboard roads. Only thing that will fix that is upgraded suspension. The Colorado uses leaf springs if I’m not mistaken, so it won’t ride as smooth as the 4Runner. Do some research, neither can do fast desert roads off the dealer lot. Get a TRX or raptor if you want a ready out of the box desert/dune vehicle.

Which of the aftermarket suspensions shines as far as soaking up washboard roads?

It would depend what your overall goal is, but for fast desert driving I’d go with a nice progressive suspension. Progressive coilovers to my understanding get softer with the harsher terrain, while digressive will get firm but provide better handling. A linear suspension gives the best of both worlds, but again comes down to preference and how harsh or not you’ll actually be driving on rough terrain. Take it as a grain of salt, just my understanding. The pro comes with fox shocks which are progressive, but I’ve ridden in one and I’m not very impressed with them with how expensive they are. They do great on asphalt, but perosnal opinion is that they’re subpar for off-roading.

OP, read through this. You should get a good understanding of suspension and then figure out what you’re looking to really do with your rig. If you plan on high speed desert driving, be ready to dump a boat load of cash into upgrading whatever vehicle you get.

MTB had some great points, but stock for stock I'd think the ZR2. The longer wheelbase will help in that sort of terrain, and it comes with DSSV shock which are supposed to be great for that type of driving.

The ZR2 Silverado just came out, and it has the same suspension setup as the Colorado. Lots of new videos of reviewers hammering it through the desert at 60mph.

I have heard Elka is a good suspension on a 4Runner, they are custom order to the weights and requirements of your particular 4Runner. I'm sure others are similar, cost is very competitive with others also.

Elka's been on my wish list for some time. I just may need to look into pulling the trigger. Seeing as how I plan to drive this 4R into the ground, it makes sense to put what I personally consider the best suspension that would do what I want on it finally.

I've communicated some with @Oldtoyotaguy about this suspension. He has a good thread about his experience with Elka. I need to hit him up again for a long-term review...

Any thoughts on Old Man Emu BP 51 vs Fox 2.5 with remote reservoir with DSC for suspension? Heard these can make driving over whoops and desert washouts and washboards better?

Yes ELKA 2.5DC are very comfy. But just 2front coilovers + 2 rear shocks price is almost same as Kings complete kit. For high speed driving may be Kings are known for its performance. I purchased ELKA for both slow and high speed comfort (over Kings per the 4x4 shop). Not sure if they are ready for high speed abuse like Kings.

Nice. Will check those out. I don’t usually blast 50-60 miles an hour through desert roads. Just would like to get in the 30-40mph range without feeling like cars about to rattle apart into pieces at any second. A nice plush soft ride on and off road is what I’m after
