So what a let down (not really, but sorta). While picking up our 4Runner yesterday the dealer told us since we had the smart key we just had to download the Toyota app to get the remote start functionality. We can't find it anywhere on the app - we can't subscribe to it.

After researching Youtube, forums and the internet - I found out that only the PRO and PREMIUM packages have that option available. Let down.

What is the best way to go about getting remote start using our smart remote FOB? I don't want to do a 3rd party install, although I like ACCESSORIDES package.

Does Toyota just re-program the remote? Or is there more to it. I have searched this forum, I just didn't see anything specifically about the remote.

    Thanks and Happy Easter

You are correct. Remote start is only fitted to the Pro and Limited trims. They include connected services for a limited time after which it becomes a paid service. Missed opportunity by Toyota is you ask me as they build so many more trumps than just these two. That being said, there are some aftermarket systems you can get that you control from your smart phone and I’ve heard they offer more flexibility than OEM. So you can have an effective remote start system should you choose. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Do you know any reputable aftermarket remote start kits that are easily self installed?

I did compustar in mine. Its cool. Install was cake, took about an hour. Plug and play. The one 12voltsolutions has is nice ive heard also, and they are a vendor here. (left side of the screen, under official venders)
    https://www.4runners.com/forums/12volt-solutions.74/

Also, I know you said you didn't want a aftermarket set up, but, many I've heard from, have had several issues with the OEM remote start. Some, have had none. I've had the compustar set up 1 day after buying my rig, and all I've ever done to it, is change batteries. Not a single hiccup. I also like how it doesn't shut off if you open the door. But it will kill it with any input/touch. Break, or gear selector. I hate when I start the rig, grab my bag and coffee, run out, unlock it, open the door, and the rig shuts off, just so I can get in, and start it again. Don't happen with the compustar, which I dig. Best of luck mate.

To the OP, since you have a '22 the Compustar will shut off when you open the door because of the push to start. I have one in mine. One thing I like is you can set the time you want into run and I think 35 minutes is the max. I like that when camping and want heat. Really like when leaving my dog in the 4R in the summer.

Can I keep my original keys with the compustar system?

I installed the accessorides module on my 2021 ORP... I can remote start with my factory fob *or* through the accessorides phone APP.

It looks like a complicated mess of wires, but it's all plug-and-play. Follow the directions and plug it in to the respective places, and it just worked.

It has not let me down yet.

Yes, sort of. You can use your stock remote with the 3X button press but the range is limited by the remote. Stock remote range is like 30-50 feet line of sight. The Compustar 2-way remotes have a range of 1500 feet. I have the R3 Prime? the remote is tiny, range is incredible.

Hold stock remote under chin and open mouth. It triples the range. Sounds stupid but it works.

Start-X is a good cheaper option
12 volt is a good option too

As said before, opening the door on push button Start models will shut it off.

A quick question about a shutting off when the door opens, is that true for all 3rd party remote starters?

Every single one will do that if you have push button start. It's designed by Toyota that way.

Thank you gentlemen for the quick replies.

On a -5F morning remote start will still be really nice regardless. The only pain is if you are loading your Runner in the morning before you’re actually leaving. Last question is it just the driver’s door that shuts it off, or any door opening on your Runner will shut it off.

Any door. What I normally do is reach in with my hands and hit the brake and button.. or that was in my Tacoma anyway. My 4Runner has a key.

You do NOT need to connect it to the DCM.

I installed the N2 remote starter with phone module when I first got my 2022 ORP. Very easy and good customer service. Phone app is 39$ a year and gives you control to the vehicle.

Obviously you don't need this now since you added a different key fob. Hold the key fob under your chin and open your mouth. Looks stupid but increases the range by double and sometimes triple. I thought it was crazy when I heard about this, but it works.

I think you can short the door open indicator, and it will stay running. Just figure a way to make the plunger on the door think its shut, then when you open the drivers door, it will keep running. Of course, your interior lights wont come on when you get in..

I originally installed the Accessoride kit and am happy with it. Originally I just installed the kit that uses the factory key fob but the range really does suck as others have said. I added the carlink module so that I can start, unlock, & lock with my phone. I ordered the carlink module from accessorides also. The first year is free then its $39.99 per year for the subscription.

Is the key fob just old design? Or does battery life cause it to get worse as they drain? Any idea where the antennas are in the truck?

i always used the Accessorides remote start. Had it on my Taco and Titan too, now 4runner. Nothing but happy with them.
